Hard to believe but it’s been over 6 years since the government, and most likely powerful hidden forces, shut down the very popular poker websites on Black Friday. That means millions of Americans 20 -26 have never had easy access to quality poker games on the internet.

I would appreciate it if people at or close to the age of 20 to 26 tell us what your generation is doing for hobbies at this time now that the personal freedom of enjoying easy access to the exciting stimulating mental activity of competive online poker was snatched from all of us on tax day April 15, 2011.

if you really think about it they probably wouldn't have shut down online poker if americans weren't so bad at it.

Looks like opioid and heroin use rapidly rose since 2011 according to the graph on Wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opioid_epidemic

Also from the article:

"In 2015 there were 52,000 American deaths from all drug overdoses. Two thirds of them, 33,000, were from opioids, compared to 16,000 in 2010..."
_____

So one could argue that since Black Friday opioid use and deaths have almost doubled.

Some of this generation actually does play poker (USA). I'm a 31 year online poker/live poker veteran and there are a few 22 year old 'hot shots' who have risen up through the live rankings and play 5/10+ in my region. They all talk about 'GTO', Doug Polk YouTube, and 'ranges' at the poker table with no understanding of why it's inappropriate to do so. They often correct fish while the rest of the regs seeth in rage and roll their eyes at one another. These younger guys know all of the technical lingo, but lack the social understanding of the live game (even more than the original internet generation) - technically they understand the advanced concepts at a much higher level than I did at that age (partly because of the availability of information now, and the advancement of GTO/range theory), but the younger guys also seem to misapply these concepts frequently. It's sort of comical to listen to them justify terrible plays after-the-fact and listen to all the terminology being applied incorrectly. I think it's a prime example of these guys not building a solid foundation online but instead jumping into advanced Run-It-Once videos and trying to apply it to live poker, it's like watching a train-wreck. These kids are all technically pretty bright through. They just lack social awareness, 'street smarts', etc. They will probably actually be quite good in a few more years and I do work harder on my game now so that they don't surpass me.

That story seems unlikely, given that millions of Americans 20-26 have never had easy access to quality poker games on the internet.

I, too, would like to hear the story of these millions of young Americans who must really struggle with a lack of things to do since they are apparently unable to play online poker now.

If they lack for hobbies, perhaps they could ask those under 20 how they've had easy access to quality poker games on the internet.

I'm 28 and started playing underage on pstars at 16. I started home games with all my friends etc. Black Friday hit when we were all at the end of college and or already working jobs. I'm not joking when I say every member of our home games and crew are all successful independent adults. Im not saying poker is the sole factor but it kept us all off drugs and away from any nefarious activities. doesnt mean I haven't done some stupid degenerated things though

I feel bad for the younger generations

People found new ways to get entertainment via the internet.

A typical pastime for a 20-something is "Netflix and chill", isn't it?

Added to your post.

People in poker always act like 2000-2010 was the one time in history where side money could be made and it was only through poker. Side income (and for the lucky few, gross income) can and always will be able to be made through unique efforts. The grinders of yesterday are the twitch streamers of today.

We're out here. The main reason we talk strat at the table is to try and make a friend with another young guy. There's very few of us. I'd estimate ~10 in la, ~10 sd, ~20 Vegas.

We all talk about GTO but nobody except for very few people know true Gto of the game type and we will never ****ing tell you what that is. Perfect example is Doug Polk, Ryan Fees and the older generation who claim they know Gto but don't. Doug, Ryan, and Upswing are great heads-up, 6 max, and plo players (Jnandez), but their fullring play is ****ing horrific. I'm surprised other people haven't called them out on their fullring **** yet but it hurts their bottom line I guess so they don't. I suspect JMo must be deliberately sabotaging their fullring curriculum because it's absolute ****ing dog**** What is the Lost Poker Generation 20 - 26 into now?. Oh well they were like the 1st wave. Even my 30yo Commerce King friend is ****ing failing lately.

Maybe if one of you older pros would talk to us on the side without ****ing trying to scam us or fleece us of our money or knowledge we'd be less reserved.

ESports, Hearthstone, CS:GO, becoming online personalities is all trending among the nerds that probably would have played poker pre black friday.

The barrier to entry into poker is getting harder and harder for the younger generations. There's about 500 poker pros aged 26-32. There's about 60 poker pros/breaking into the industry aged 21-25. I postulate there will be about ~15 poker pros that come up in the next 5 years who are 18-21 right now.

To get into poker professionally from a young age you need:
A card gaming background (Magic: the Gathering)
At least a $4000 starter bankroll built via online poker.

Building a bankroll on Ignition poker is a lot harder now that they have segregated the sports betters and because of lack of advertising to reel in newer players.

Magic the Gathering has also died in comparison to Hearthstone, and Hearthstone doesn't adequately prepare card gamers for poker like Magic did.

Let's dub the 21-25 generation the "Fedor Generation". The special thing about our generation is that we have access to more knowledge then the previous generations via the internet as well as have youth as a resource to make allegiance ties to the 27-32 generation top dogs. There's 2 30yo plo pros I admire at commerce for example that if I play my cards right I can get slotted into that tier 1 clique.

Another reason there will be very few coming up after the Fedor Generation is that the Fedor Generation with it's massive knowledge advantage will exterminate them. I already feel the 35+ old school generation being very fearful of me. The 30yo generation is already wiping them out. I'm ****ing scared of the 30yo's with their massive bankroll and above-average skill.

FWIW, there was little hidden about it, just look at who among US casinos reportedly worked against passage of Reid 2.0 in 2010.

Poker using the Ethereum blockchain to some degree is not unforeseen

(FWIW, There is a difference between putting up a stake on your own play and betting on someone else's play. However, the Isle of Man authorizes licensed operators to take deposits in the form of esports skins, so some interesting cross-selling might be in the works.)
