Pretty interesting read from an online poker pro who has moved into entrepreneurship and startups.

Pretty good read, suprised he got in with just an email. Sounded like he went in well prepared but with no experience it was a longshot

At the age of 26, this was his first job interview, ever ?

Nice pitch email FWIW, but what was the Playtagit product he brought to Silicon Valley ?

No shame in a swing and a miss. He apparently has learned from the described experience, the guy googles up a nice track record of sticking to his goal..... including the Blonk business on which this was posted.

Solid read thx for posting

Story should be inspiring to others trying to make a move in business .

He decided who could help him get where you wanted to go, got to the person at the top, was creative and prepared.

So ballsy of him to reach out directly to sequoia dude even though he had no experience in that space.

I like the pathologically optimistic ending.

Great stuff.

Good article, but flawed approach. Rather than 'interviewing' for a position at Seqouia, he should have used it as a networking opportunity to be put in contact with other mid managers at VC firms, IMO.

"The doctors informed me I had a 40-60% chance of it recovering on any level, which was not too comforting."

Damn this tilts the hell out of me. Is it too pedestrian to say 50-50?

No it's just too inaccurate. I often use 60/40, 80/20 and even 95/5 when striving to estimate / describe non poker event probabilities.

It mystifies people without probability nous, but you would expect a poker player understand

not sure the author was saying 60/40 or between 40% and 60%, in the latter cause, ya i'd just call it 50%.

enjoyed the article though, nice to see things like this happen (getting that interview). also like the blonk idea, hope he does well with it.

Ahhhh I see I misread it. Not sure I can figure out the difference between 40-60% and coin flip either but I haven't finished drinking coffee yet

This is an interesting article, the app is interesting too, I love the way it's been put together, very simple and intuitive, all in all a great idea.
Most people will be given a chance if they ask for it in the correct way and this is proof that it's possible to get front of people with a direct eye-catching approach.

Good read. I'm pretty surprised that a billionaire head of a venture capital firm would conduct a job interview himself.

According to his bio he had stepped down from his position at his VC firm because of an incurable illness the previous year, so I'm guessing he just happened upon it as an overseer and it piqued his interest and he had the time.

I don't think this is the correct approach. If Moritz didn't want to hire him, why would he refer him to someone else?

The author should have not treated it like a job interview; instead have asked Moritz for connections he could network with.

By treating it as an interview, the author allowed himself one shot at landing a job at Seqouia rather than many opportunities at other VC firms.

it seems you think that Moritz takes meetings just so he can open some doors for them?
