FWIW my dad was totally blind for the last 15 years of his life (diabetes).
I always thought he did amazingly well mentally. He even trained himself to walk on his own with a prosthetic leg by the time I was in first grade, and would insist on walking my bicycle to the bus stop all by himself so I could ride it back home alongside him. We even had Braille dominoes, playing cards and other tools to make imprints, but they were crude at the time.
But yeah, being blind is nuts. He told me a lot of horror stories about nasty accidents with seeing-eye dogs back when the gov't thought animals were better guides than humans. And he also told me there were a couple of suicides at the Commission for the Blind school where he was rooming when he first lost his sight.
Sorry for the derail... just thought it might be relevant since I lived alone with a blind person my entire childhood.
