It is not pitch black inside if there is night vision camera.

Also, I played 5/10 NL with Richard earlier this year at Bellagio and he had limp / re-raise in his arsenal.

People keep saying this, yet the cave guy and girl (linked several times itt) did 126 days and 88 days respectively isolated separately in a dark cave without any reported lasting after effects.

I originally voted that I could do it. But man, 30 days is a long ****ing time. Dude has huge balls for attempting this

It might have been 'dark' simply bc it was a cave, but they had lamps and a bunch of books etc, nothing like this set up. They just didn't see sunlight or people

This is true.

One of the longest times spent without sunlight was the Chilean miners. They did have artificial light thought and were given special sun glasses upon their emergence above ground.

Obviously they probably had an adjustment period going from living in complete darkness and isolation, it just sounds like nothing else of note.

People keep talking about the 'obvious' and 'devastating' lasting effects of being in the darkness for prolonged periods of time; but are there any articles beyond that BBB show and the above article that follow up with the people who have already done this after say 90 days?

The more I read and think about this bet the more I'm likening it to someone being paid $100k on a dare to do ayahuasca or to go to jail for 30 days.

**looks like I glanced over G+Ts comment, yeah, essentially that

This isn't remotely comparable, but I thought this would be pretty doable initially. I got food poisoning and did pitch black room for 36 hours, no electronics but gf was checking on me. I slept probably half the time away, and I still felt like I was losing my ****.

Needing to see friends has never been a problem for me, as I have a hard time getting bored, so thats not a factor. If I did this, the majority of my focus would be on staying as healthy as possible, because I feel like the second you start getting sick this whole thing falls apart.

Huck Seed is the real life Bill Brasky.

It's not the cave experiment that's the troubling part of the article for me. It's the people suffering hallucinations within 48 hours in a more similar experiment with the total isolation and sensory deprivation as this bet. I guess that could have been a brief blip and the next 28 days would have gone fine.

It's the totality that's the key. People keep saying that they could go for a month without sunlight/light OR without human interaction OR without any outside stimulation like books/music. It's all of them combined that's troubling.

There are longer and better articles about the 1965 cave experiments. As has been pointed out, there were possibly key differences: though they were in total darkness they had access to electronic equipment (and somehow read books?), took part in huge numbers of experiments, and were in contact with outside control agents. I don't see anything on lasting issues for those two.

The woman who broke the 1965 record and stayed underground for 111 days apparently committed suicide soon after. However an article also said "A week later in Paris, sitting and talking with a reporter, Le Guen was considerably less emotional and frankly surprised by the before-and-after sameness of everything up here."

Anyone who thinks this would be easy is a basement dwelling neckbeard with no real life experience. This would be insanely difficult and theres a high likelihood he just leaves the room in a delirious state after a couple days.

I will bet any amount and give you any odds that he makes it past a week

There is still a small chance the whole thing is not what it seems. I know one person in their regular game offered $500 to be taken to where he was to confirm everything was on the up and was told no.

there are very legitimate reasons to keep the location secret. if people knew where the location was i could easily see someone calling the police on them and they would be screwed.

My first impression was like most people's, Scumbag Rich just took one of the worst bets of all time. However, it seems like the guy is still going strong way past everyone's expectations. Any credible updates? Is this guy really on like ~2 weeks without light? Feel like if hes made it this far then his chances of succeeding have risen drastically.

Well yeah if he didn't make it two weeks his chances would be zero

Siffre did three months in isolation, his assistants camped at the mouth of the cave and acted as 'ground control', turning on the lights in the cave when he woke and turning them off when he felt drowsy. When the lights were off he was in absolute darkness.

When he eventually emerged, Siffre was a changed man. Though many of the negative effects were temporary, some were long lasting. Three years after leaving Midnight Cave, Siffre still had memory lapses, his eyesight remained poor, and he had what he described as inexplicable 'psychological wounds.'

This bet is an even more intense experience, so the damage will be greater.

Imagine he is hallucinating by now. In fact, I hear he is crushing the 10/20 game he is playing currently. His opponents keep checking in the dark.

Haven't seen this in the thread, but to me a major psychological challenge would be the door right there, a few feet away. Presumably constantly torturing him "Here I am, just turn the handle and you're free." Suffering ended immediately. One split second of mental weakness and he goes for the door. If Alati survives this, he is a beast IMO.

We don't know if he's suffering. He voluntarily did this. For all we know he's done stuff like this all of his life and actually enjoys the solitude. There are people that eat rocks, people that drink gasoline, maybe this dude just loves being secluded.

I thought it was Huck Seed no bed the whole time lol, with a bed it is a lot easier. Total darkness plus bed you barely want to get up sometimes anyway.

Okay scratch "suffering" and lets say there's a very high probability of mental discomfort or extreme mental discomfort. Judging by the huge outcry over this bet, it's safe to say most humans would be suffering. Maybe Alati is a sick human outlier who is unfazed by this. Maybe he "does stuff like this all the time." I doubt it.

They want to see if they can get a reality tv show from this. What kind of show would it be if the guy quits 3 days in? Those looking to profit from it control all the variables. Is the timing of food really random? Does the food contain any drugs that would assist in success? Is it really absolute darkness? What’s in the shower and toilet area off camera? Can he get communications in those areas? Why is the lawyer watching?
