God so many people in poker are tools. It's not cool to go around making threats (yes, even towards oneself) around ANYONE, much less staff who are forced to deal with you. The frat boy culture of poker is so boring and pathetic. Grow up, be kind to others, and learn what the word consent means, because the hotel clerks didn't sign up for crap like this. Employees don't want to deal with, and shouldn't have to deal with, jerks who think nothing of how their behaviour affects others.

Medical evaluation and banning after such behaviour is entirely appropriate. Saying "it was just a joke and it was an overreaction" is thinking like a 5 year old.

Also this hasn't been mentioned yet. But who scooped this story to the New York Post? Im sure casinos get frivolous lawsuits fairly regularly that never get reported on. The Post is quoting the lawsuit directly so they clearly had a copy. Are pending lawsuit available in public for anyone to read, I wouldn't think so.

My guess it was someone who wants the story to be public hoping that Borgata will quickly settle so it goes away.

I know who I am betting on.....

I hope he learned his lesson. From now on he should ask it like this:

"If my cat falls out the window, when he hits the ground will he only have 8 lives left?"

The worse that could happen is they would take his cat for a psych evaluation.

In other words:

"Will the cat make the jump?"

The only thing missing from that story compared to this is the guy who steals the ambulance from the hospital did not sue the hospital for ambulance that doesnt drive through mud

Agreed. Why can't professional poker players just show up, showered and shaved, make benign table talk, stack the bad players, cash out and go home?

Having just written this, I think the answer to my own question is that people who can do that and earn a living a poker are much more likely to earn a lot more money with an actual job.

That video:
Yea, those were some great TV times. JRB made all the mistakes, you don't celebrate a good flop, and then you don't start calling out cards you don't want to see.

Phil getting beat is always great TV.

I genuinely don't get how any "poker pros" can be dumb enough not to understand their image, whether it be at the table or in public. OP thinking they are being smart making these posts is equivalent to Allen Kessler thinking they are am aggressive player.

I got thrown out of a casino for counting cards at a $5 blackjack table, the business is private property and they can ask (tell) someone to leave for most any reason.

Joking about being a jumper is apparently a good enough reason.

Perhaps this is asking too much of the front desk clerk, but why was he given a room key in the first place if he was considered to be a jumper, or a threat to himself or others? Shouldn't the clerk have gotten his supervisor immediately to decide whether to call in the psych squad, or at a minimum, just have security escort him out the front door? Why let the situation escalate by checking him in, and potentially putting him or others at risk?

She gave him the key then thought more about what he said before telling her supervisor.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Because if the situation were to escalate you'd much prefer it to happen right after he's gotten to his private room, as opposed to at the front desk.

Lol, brilliant. How about this?

Front desk clerk thinks a guest may be suicidal upon check in. She has two choices:

A) call supervisor and convey her concerns. Supervisor can immediately call security (10 security guards could have him surrounded in a matter of seconds if necessary), and isolate him from potentially harming himself or anyone else.

Or

B) Hand him a room key to go up to his room alone after he asked questions about the survivability of falling out of the window, which raised enough initial concern to basically default to option A after a long enough delay for guest to kill himself or someone else.

I hope for society's sake you dont work a crisis hotline (or hotel management). Sending people off on their own when there is sufficient reason to be concerned about their safety, while having options to control the situation safely, the choice seems obvious.

Maybe she questioned it and asked others what to do....

She is not the ultimate decision maker or evaluator, often her job is to report the key events to management.

I bolded one important word here. Weird that you put a crisis hotline and hotel management on equal footing.

When you're working the former, your sense of "sufficient reason to be concerned" will be considerably higher than when you're checking in guests at a hotel. If you're on staff for a crisis hotline and someone asks about jumping from a high floor, you're flying into action while making every effort to calm down the caller.

For a check-in clerk at a hotel, there was still a tremendous amount of uncertainty. Is there sufficient reason? Obviously, it's non-zero, given that this very hotel had experienced exactly such an episode the previous year. Or is this another douchebag looking to talk a big game?

Somewhere between yelling "SWARM! SWARM!" in the lobby versus sending a guy to a 30th-floor room then going off without worry for a vape break is where the check-in clerk resided in that spot.

Obviously, we're largely relying on the news article and the suit on which it is based, but reportedly, authorities arrived at the room "soon after" he got upstairs. So credit the clerk for apparently making that call. Let's be honest, it probably wouldn't happen in most situations, but at Borgata, the sensibilities for this kind of thing are heightened. Sure, you'd hope someone would maybe put the person on a lower floor before making the call, but Dick Tracy has it right: might not have crossed his/her mind until after the check-in was complete. Or Outoftime has it right: there are certain parameters at which the clerk is asked to escalate these matters elsewhere, and he/she did.

I'll offer up a couple of additional possibilities:

1. The check-in clerk DIDN'T contact security. Instead, he/she said something to a co-worker, that person remembered the Eric Zaun episode and realized it's more serious than the clerk might have realized.

2. The claim in the lawsuit that the windows "are several inches thick and do not open" is 100 percent correct, and thus the check-in clerk knew that Robbins wasn't in any immediate danger even on such a high floor. Nonetheless, there is no reason to give him enough time to pull any stunt, so he/she called this one in as a precaution.

Anyway, I'm gonna make an uneducated guess on how this ends: this will settle of our court, the Borgata will ultimately agree to pick up the tab for the psych evaluation and the ambulance ride. Meanwhile, if the plaintiff agrees to STFU about the situation moving forward, the Borgata will lift the ban after one year.

Years from now, Robbins will be throwing back his third PBR at Wet Willie's when Christian Lusardi happens to sit down in a nearby stool. One will discover the other's past in poker and the two begin exchanging stories. They both see Borgata in the distance. Breaking a moment of silence, Lusardi says, "You'll never believe what happened to me at that place."

After hearing that yarn, Robbins responds by saying, "Oh yeah? Hold my cat... and get a load of THIS!"

Hilarious. "hold my cat" line was comedy at a high level. Lusardi and his lack of understanding of even basic plumbing still one of my favorite stories in poker.

original poster filing this lawsuit is just a drain on the system. he is going to cause stress on people who fear being accused of things, cost people their own money and time, cost companies and insurance companies money that will have to charge more to customers like all of us, will cost the state legal system thousands of dollars and time...

all because he is an entitled jackass who is not only a jerk but wants to extort people because of such behavior . only winners here will be the hourly paid defense attorneys, although they are probably hitting themself in the head for having to spend their time on stupid case
