Ha, it is very clear--and I think Cates even straight up said--that he was proactively trying to be more social/interesting. But it is forced, and frankly, not very entertaining. Yeah, the dude is on the spectrum and I don't say this as a criticism of him. But there's a big difference between real charisma and the show Jungleman tries to put on. If you think that there difference between early televised Jungleman and today's Jungleman is the development of any real charisma, I have a bridge to sell you.

BOO THIS MAN

Jungle is easily the most entertaining high stakes player social skills wise. I mean, yeah, I guess he's not Brad Pitt or Dicaprio, but he's way better than the other dimwits currently plaguing the scene.

Good points, probably does. Dressing as Macho Man Dan, saying he's already won, then winning in the most prestigious event of the year!

Should be worth a dozen bracelets of attention.

Personally, I think poker is dying in terms of general interest, which is a shame as Dan would be star.

imo, years ago, his lack of charisma was charisma in and of itself. I've only seen a bit of what he's doing now and think it's fine.

Are you saying you think they shouldn't have done it? Would you have passed it up? Don't say the sponsors shouldn't have sponsored. All of those had a following.
They got their money's worth (although in the case of Full Tilt, they just spent their player's money).

I never said nor implied anything of the kind.

agreed it is forced and he's not naturally charismatic but at least he's making an effort. And he's fairly entertaining.
Way too many "pros" and regs who aren't on the spectrum make zero effort to even be remotely pleasant at the table.

Which post-Boom players would have become huge (and possibly mainstream) stars had they been born at the right time?

Selbst? Jungleman? Poker Bunny?

Who?
Seta-beni. In his RIO blogs, he always made clear his strategy always revolved around exploiting the fish and bad regs to the maximum (using data), with relatively little consideration to GTO-equilibrium plays. Considering his success over recent years, and the fact the main characteristic of the poker boom years was the great influx of recreationals who knew absolutely nothing but had the money, can´t see why this guy wouldn´t be considered the GOAT back then.

Eccentric used to play very big in the boom. Jungleman has it in abundance, and on top of it he's terrific at just about all of the games.

If Paul Magriel can quack quack like a duck at the TV featured table, and Chris Ferguson can be a UCLA PhD candidate pretending to be a cowboy, then Cates with his unusual social skills, willingness to play the biggest games and the best competition, and terrific all around abilities would have been a big hit.

Magriel did not just do that for the cameras, lol. He just thought it was fun and did it in low stakes games when I played with him. A very nice guy in person.
