Ontario Gambling platform to be launched in the next few weeks after years in development. Poker is not there yet but it will be soon.


Not sure how much effect this will have if any due to the fact it's the provincial government and not federal but it can't help matters any. Also, almost 1/2 of Canada's population lives in Ontario alone.

There are other provinces that already have online gambling websites, such as, Manitoba and BC, but when almost 1/2 of Canada's population gets it's own website, it will only make matters worse I imagine.

My post said said almost 50%, (17.5 Million people would be 50%) it's 40% which it's close enough, no other province even comes close, the bulk of Canada's population is in Ontario and it always has been.

When the bulk of a Countries population get's it's own gambling platform because they are tired of seeing the money go to offshore sites, it's only going to add more pressure to kick Stars out of Canada

As usual stars will most likely reimburse for any games in which you are 'materially affected' but such a f#*k on and obv I would have won them all

So after 6 days I got their response and they didn't answer my question when I asked them why were those players not given any prior notice though you claim that players will be informed well in advance instead they send me their usual bs "Our management regularly reviews our blah blah blah. Following our most recent review, it was blah blah blah" They clearly ignored my question and I have asked them again and will keep asking them until I get my answer.

save your time Anuj, I have been asking them so many different question for 38 days now regarding their decision to exit my country, and they still me the same answer which is " our management regularly reviews............." . and it is impossible for them to speculate if they will be back or not.

I couldn´t see anything in this post related to Russia (the above link goes to a thread dedicated to poker in Australia).

Saw this today (did Russia just ban online poker?) and wondered if there were any Russians reading this thread that could shed some more light on it (*).

How Bill 478806-6 Criminalises Online Poker

As far as online poker players are concerned, the language used in Article 1 of the Bill is the most worrying. It states (translated from the Russian text):

1. Organization and (or) conducting gambling with play equipment outside the gambling area, or by using information and telecommunications networks, including the Internet, as well as means of communication, including mobile communications, or without obtaining permission in accordance with established procedure on the activity of the organization and conduct of gambling in the gambling zone is punishable by a fine up to five hundred thousand roubles or the salary or other income for a period of one to three years, or by compulsory works for a period of one hundred eighty to two hundred forty hours, or restraint of liberty for up to four years, or by deprivation sentence of up to two years.

Significantly the bill makes no distinction between an organisation "conducting gambling" and an individual; and a strict interpretation of the language used implies that any individual playing online poker outside of the designated areas is committing an offence.

Now the Bill has been passed by the State Duma, it goes to the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation (the upper house of the Russian parliamentary system) where it is likely to get rubber-stamped. Unlike the Gambling Act of 2007 which gave Russian casinos a grace period of two and a half years, Bill 478806-6 will become effective immediately once it has passed through the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation.

Something seems to have been lost in translation there.

That bill does not criminalize playing poker, just organization and conduct of (in the sense of hosting, not participating in) gambling activities.

The bit quoted in red in the post above already exists in the current criminal code (since 2011, if I'm not mistaken).

What this new bill does is pretty much changes the number of things you're held responsible for according to the article from 2 to 3, thus fine-tuning the punishment, so to speak.

TL;DR: If the bill passes, organizing online gambling will still be illegal in Russia, participating will still be legal.

Mild delirium - thanks for your feedback. However, I saw an article on Calvin Ayre website that says the new regulations apply to live and online gambling - "Russia Accuses Foreign Embassies of Hosting Illegal Gambling".

Pretty funny about the Canadians having a PokerStars server in the basement of their embassy.

You're welcome. The current regulations apply to both online and live gambling as well, nothing will change in that regard when the new bill passes. From the article you linked:

Yeah, that would certainly be interesting. I suppose it's even possible that some embassy is actually doing that (not being Russian territory and all), although not sure why would they bother.
