A group of record labels and music publishers, including UMG Recordings and Universal Music, has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the company behind the poker website PokerNews. The music companies note that several podcasts published through PokerNews use unlicensed recordings. They request damages that could add up to several million dollars.

This seems like remarkably aggressive copyright enforcement litigation against a company as big as Stars.

Notice reportedly goes back three years: “iBus Media was notified that it was infringing Plaintiffs’ copyrighted works nearly three years ago. Nevertheless, iBus Media continues to infringe. iBus Media’s infringement is therefore willful and deliberate,”

If iBus Media had notice, but did not cease or get a license, that was arrogant.

It is not that difficult or expensive to get a license for use in a podcast, especially for a company that makes frequent use.

Hellmuth thinks he can dodge bullets.

Tony G is the true dodger of bullets .

Either Tony G didn't disclose notice from IBus as part of due diligence for sale, or he did and Stars juts didn't give a Shiff.

50/50 but lame either way.

Stars appears to have owned PokerNews since long before the stuff alleged in the OP.

FWIW, I think that Stars obtained control of PokerNews sometime in the first quarter of 2012.

oh. I though it was sold in late 2017.

but after talking to Mr. Google a bit more, sounds like that's when they made a statement about the transfer of ownership that had , like you said, been going on for quite a while.

Yah, they made a statement about it because the ownership change was revealed without their consent in the Paradise Papers, and thus, it could no longer be a secret.

wow. hadnt seen the paradise stuff.

Since Stars was trying to be hush hush on their ownership position on PokerNews, wonder of they disclosed to DGE on their licensing apps.

Licensing folks get pretty pissed when you dont properly disclose stuff that is clearly required.

It's a sad commentary on the state of the world that some copyright dorks feel free to file a lawsuit against an international gambling syndicate. I wonder how long before home owners associations start harassing drug cartels for failure to properly maintain their lawns?
