I've had a couple "bad trips" myself actually. They weren't fun, but I learned a lot about myself from them. LSD isn't some happy pill - it might bring negative thoughts and emotions out for some people, in some settings. For most people a bad trip is a learning experience and something to grow from.

Maybe we have different definitions of "losing your mind". I was floating down a river once, so tripped out on acid that it looked like all of the bushes alongside the river were actually snakes waving to me. But I knew it was just in my head. I never actually thought they were snakes. And despite taking 300ug of acid I could still have conversations, find my way back to our island campsite, cook myself dinner, etc.
Maybe it's different for some people? Obviously drugs effect everyone different but I've never been so messed up on LSD that I couldn't function or find my way home - unfortunately can't say the same for beer
