I think it always needed to be changed, but a lot of players who are new to Live have trouble resisting the pressure from long time live degenerates who push responsible players to do stupid things like loan someone with a gambling problem money.

I think its ridiculous that people loaned each other absurd amounts of money with no written contracts, no legal documents, etc. And this is considered standard and you are "uncool" if you are not down to toss people a few K (or more) whenever they need it. Resist the peer pressure.

Really sorry WCG, I am not meaning to "pile on" you. I agree with your advice and wish people thought about this more. I have seen *many* of my poker friends get swept up in the poker world and think its standard to have loans out to like 10 people and never be paid back.

I can understand giving in to the pressure (though I wouldn't) as you can take a lot of flack and hassle for being a supposed "tightwad" -- the kind of crap that would confirm to me that I wouldn't want to hang out with them anyways, but whatever. I have been scammed over the internet before, just not involving poker, so we can all make mistakes.

this and this. my understanding is 0.9 is like the max people will pay for merge and to unload higher amounts you might have to sell for less, say 0.87? if so, $30k Merge ~= $26k cash, so WCG is getting 15% return by getting 1:1. 15% is like the interest rate on medium-risk personal loans afaik. This one just happened to default, and now WCG is taking measures to 1) warn the community, 2) use his remaining leverage to encourage payback. I don't think he needs a lesson in when/why to loan money to friends/strangers.

I'm not defending Brad Booth at all. I was the first one who warned him about the transaction. Doug knows all about Brad and we've had a couple talks about what he should do about the situation and I was for him starting this thread.

So prior to the scam threads spreading like wildfire folks generally said oh I dunno 3-5 percent of all poker players are profitable and can support themselves from playing the game...still the case or are we down to <1% as I originally thought?
