Who was behind the court case that took the government to court in QC?

I believe Loto-Quebec asked for it and the Quebec Government amended a bill to make it happen, but the Quebec Court of Appeal struck it down. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association took them to court and won.

A bit more detail:

Quote:
Quebec Court of Appeal confirms that a province cannot compel Internet service providers to block access to unauthorized gambling websites. The Court confirmed that the exclusive federal jurisdiction over telecommunications extends to online communications, clarifying a legal uncertainty regarding constitutional jurisdiction over the Internet.
Quote:
This decision makes the Quebec Court of Appeal one of the first Canadian courts to directly address the issue of constitutional jurisdiction over the Internet. The decision reminds provincial legislators who are working to adapt their legislation to new technologies that the regulation of Internet service providers in their role as providers of access to Internet content is the prerogative of the federal government.

As far as I know you guys still don't have access to bodog/bovada's poker or sportsbook or do I have that wrong? Cash games there are very good at most stakes but the tournaments do not compare to the ones you listed.

Those are not, and a few others as well, but I think it has more to do with the companies themselves rather than some provincial regulation, unless it's language-related.

“Canada is very close to our hearts. It’s our home ground and where PokerStars was born over 20 years ago,” a spokesperson said in a statement to pokerfuse. “It will be a historical moment for us to be licensed in our home province.”

“We are working with the AGCO and iGO on processes related to the new provincial regulatory model, and are focused on ensuring that we will continue to have an attractive offering for our community,” the statement went on to say. “We will update you when we have more interesting details to share.”
Quote:
Indeed, as reported by US Gaming Review last week, some evidence had surfaced that PokerStars was planning a launch in Ontario, and pokerfuse recently spotted what looked to be development efforts to prepare a special poker client for the Ontario online poker market.

With the April 4 date fast-approaching, having new online poker sites ready for this day may not be feasible. However, pokerfuse understands that there could be a transition period, where existing platforms will remain operational as new, Ontario-licensed sites receive full authorization.

If all goes to plan, there should be a smooth switch with no downtime for Ontario online poker players. Operators are not expecting a blackout period as seen in other markets, pokerfuse understands.

Is this not accurate? It’s a bit higher but not anywhere near double. And rakeback is pretty **** on international servers that have a lot of volume too.

For 2/4nl and plo + and 10/20 limit+ , if the games are even slightly softer it can easily become better and possibly a lot better.

For micros, yea, the rake difference is bigger but I think the skill gap may be even more extreme.

Anyone have a clue what will happen to the "unregulated sites"..

I figure just these changes will apply to the bigger/public sites right? Party, Stars..

Or perhaps their changes will just be only crypto for deposits/withdrawals, and no more bank transfers, wires, interac, etc..

Bodog is not planning to kick us out for now according to their support forum representative.

Pretty significant story.

WSOP to expand to Canada in Ontario - newly regulated gaming market slated to go live in April.

Not so great news for poker players as the player pool will eventually be ring-fenced. But Ontario has a larger population than Pennsylvania - where already three operators are running.

But pretty interesting considering that WSOP has opted to use GG's software instead of 888 which it has been using in the US.

888 is also licensed, PokerStars is also thought to be working with Ontario regulators and BetMGM/partypoker too.

So if I understand correctly, there are two significant implications for Ontario online players (please correct me if this is wrong):

1) As of April 4, we will be unable to play on any site that isn't licensed in Ontario (e.g., Pokerstars).

2) As of April 4, we will only be able to play against other Ontario players, which effectively kills online MTTs for Ontarians.

If this is correct, this is basically our Black Friday for MTT players in Ontario.

- I think it's more accurate to look at the law as a thing for regulators to adhere to; if a site still offers games in Ontario vs Rest of the World (ROtW) you'll still be able to play there, that site will just be operating "illegally" (not sure if this is the correct word?) and greatly harm their chances of license approval in the future (as well as license approval in other segregated markets assuming these bodies share information)
- April 4th is the date when those operators w/ approved licenses will be allowed to start offering segregated games in Ontario, yes. HOWEVER, if a site has applied for a license and is waiting to hear back from iGaming Ontario they will still be allowed to operate in Ontario in the interim (i.e. Pokerstars at this moment has applied but has not received approval, they would be allowed to continue to operate in Ontario until their application is ruled on)
- Yes, outside of the odd Special tournament and series I wouldn't expect to see many large guarantee tournaments on these sites...if you're an MTT'er you're definitely hoping we quickly get to shared player pools w/ other provinces at the minimum

I believe theres also a possibility we can keep playing on a site like lets say stars who is applying for a licences while they wait for it. If I read that correctly

This is brutal. I don't even care that much about the large guarantees, I'm just a small stakes rec player. But this will basically kill MTTs, especially on a site like GG that has such a large European and Asian player pool. We'll go from MTTs with 400 runners to 25. And I doubt the government will be in much of a rush to work towards shared pools given how slowly that's progressed in the US. Arg.

Not particularly helpful but I contacted GG support today asking a few of the questions above and got this reply:

Hi,

Thank you for contacting GGPoker Support.

Unfortunately, we do not have any definitive news to share at this point.

Please note that all players will be contacted with the relevant information closer to the time.

Sorry that we could not provide more clarity at this point.

Kind Regards,

Gary

Disgusting more and more countries/ provinces in this case being greedy and taking away freedom from their people in order to try to take the whole slice of a pie when it comes to gambling $/rake etc (Typically they don't even care about poker and poker is just lumped in with online slots and blackjack/lottos that they hope to print off of)
