Most of the billion people don't even have a proper bed to sleep in much less a laptop to load Pokerstars onto. Best case scenario is the rich elite pick up the game and donate some to the high stakes community.

I wouldn't even want to have Indians playing. Their rudeness and lack of etiquette would be second to none. And we have a ton of scumbags already. It would be a close race if the Chinese masses ever got internet access and a taste for flops, turns, and rivers.

plus that % are probably the upper class of india who make a decent living, either way it won't hurt the poker scene. Single best thing? perhaps not.

This may create some sort of a boom in Asia, hopefully China and other asian countries follow suit with India, if that's the case, THAT would be the best thing.

not all indians are hardworking/intelligent. I think the gamblers of India are just as spewy as Americans are, it may catch on with some of the hardworking kids there but i'm sure the Indian kids who are doing well in engineering/medicine programs aren't indicative of the type of people who are most likely to play poker in India. It'll take a bit for it to catch on w/ the "intelligent" folk but until then, i'm sure there's going to be a lot of juicy fish .
good post

Wrong.

Indians are massive tightasses (Yes, I have a sample size) and will fight to the death for $1.

Imagine thousands of $5-$20NL grinders with the skill of $2kNL grinders. Also, they have no respect/care for white people or ethics.... so expect plenty of DoN Collusion theories and similar scandals.

Poker needs more big, fat, lazy, rich white people, ldo.

Look to chess for some encouragement. Prior to Vishi Anand appearing in the chess world, nobody really played chess there. Ever since he played Kasparov in a world championship match in the 90's, chess absolutely exploded in India, and almost every Indian has at least heard of him now, and tens of millions play the game there now.

They do love hero worship of successful Indians - witness how the cricket team is regarded - and all it would take is for a good young Indian player to burst onto the scene and win one of the major tournaments...

No...You're wrong! As are the other idiotic generalists as to Indian persona...
1) ANY (meaning about 160 or so of the 228 countries/cultures) poor people will fight tooth and nail for a dollar when they work 250 hour months for $60... that includes caucasioans, hispanics, blacks, asians, inians, etc...

2) I've sat at poker tables where Indians who know they are outclassed lose thousands and never lose their smile or good manners. (There are some eteiquette issues at the tables, but nt because of rudeness, it's because their own style sof poker: Teen Patti include slowrolling etc... as part of the fun... as in Mlayasians, Chinese etc... with baccarat)

3) The nationalities that I have experienced cheating most consistently as a cross section in live poker across 4 continents have been Korean, Swiss, French, Malaysian-Chinese and Viet. (In that order)

4) "Indian" consists of nearly a billion people sharing 70,000 dialects and as many cultural, religious and generalist differences as the whole of Europe... so to say "Indians are..." is simply moronic.

4) You're a bigoted bore.

I am an Indian living in New Delhi. Poker is booming but it is restricted to the upwardly mobile and the affluent and even these guys are hobbyists at best... it'll take another couple of years before serious poker-pros emerge from India.

This is debatable and Anand was not a product of the Indian chess tradition but a natural talent, probably self-taught, the same way Fischer was.
Chess popularity increased in India due to Anand's success and I see no reason why the same couldn't happen with poker if an Indian Durrrr emerges. It would be good for online poker companies but Indians value money and I don't expect too many clueless micro-stakes players coming out of India.

Chess boom in India, yes. International tournaments, no. So dont expect they will bring money to poker.

An early version of the game originated in India but the game has not been popular in recent times until Anand emerged on the scene.

Now for my slightly racist opinion on Indians - they tend to be really faddish. If an Indian individual or team does well in something, the entire country rallies round that activity. If they stop being successful, the support drops away quickly. True of everywhere to extent, but seems especially so with India. Just my experience from my circle of Indian friends in the UK :-) If there was an Indian poker world champ who gets exposure, I am almost certain most of them would start playing poker to emulate him/her.

This has to be a troll.

Indians who are legit tight asses will just poo-fling ldo. The good players will learn the strategy and adapt like other good players of other races. The degens will degen. Do you think Jewish players are destined to suck at NL too because of their stereotypical reputation?

I'm Indian, but I study in the UK. I think I can shed some light on quite a few issues.

Online Poker is not illegal in India. We still, for the large part, follow really outdated laws - in most states gambling in a public space is illegal, with regard to games of chance. So, there exists quite a bit of ambiguity when it comes to the Internet. But will there suddenly be a large influx of Indian Internet grinders? Well, no. The cost of living in India is considerably cheaper in India and a 200/300 dollars is a lot of money for a lot of young Indians most likely to deposit.

To be fair, I think you'll see a lot more Indian grinders on the tournament scene as opposed to the cash game scene.

But for live poker, this can only be good. Not all Indians crunch numbers and kill the game. In fact, in my experience, the majority are loose passive and love to gambooool. Macau, Vegas and even Goa will sport tons of Indian whales. Happy hunting!

And rich students that head to the UK, US to study are so lucrative it isn't even funny. I swear, I'm happy to be brown and be constantly invited to home games with these guys who want to play in pounds, flat aces pre after 4 limpers and stack off.

Caveat: some/lots of generalisation. :-P

A national poker boom is always a good thing for the game and if it is happening at one of the most populated countries in the universe it has to be even better, no matter if they all play 5nl
