India now has more then its share of Poker Tournaments with over 7 tournament series hosting tournaments every month in legal poker rooms in Goa. The country`s first land based casino has opened in Sikkim with the Poker room expected to open on 1st July (which will only fuel the current boom).

Several players have turned pro and are based in these cities grinding the cash tables and playing tournaments professionally. Almost every major city in India and a number of smaller ones have a very active home game scene and some even offer raked professional setups with a very loyal customer base. Finding a local Poker game is now quite easy! Its just a matter of time before Poker reaches the popularity this game enjoys in North America or Europe.
Is online poker legal in India?

They were poker-playing patrons of Casino Royale, and unlike this floating casino’s other regulars, were allowed to bypass the Rs 3,000 gate fee and ignore the formal dress code for entry.

Lol, wat. I'm going to guess you have never been to India? It is very common to see people in bars or trains or sat outside gambling.

A far bigger obstacle than the number of people with the internet is the reliability of the internet over most of the country. As with many other things, India currently lacks the infrastructure to become the world leaders that they desire to be. Electricity blackouts and internet lines going down for long periods are super common across most of the country even in middle class areas which could be a deterrent to many players. It is, however, still relatively common in many areas to see people playing online poker in internet cafes or to see evidence that people have been playing online there so I do expect it to take off over the next few years.

Of course a poker boom in India would be good for us at least in the short term. Any big influx of new players is good.

Where in Sikkim is it? And do you have any idea of likely stakes to be played? I might find myself in Sikkim again soon and the idea of funding my trip from poker while I'm out there sounds appealing.

Online poker is nice income for people from poor countries. It's just that some of those countries - India - has enough problems already and they should not make it legal - stars might not allow them. It's also not so good to keep beating them as they have no easy times there and are generally stupid people. China, Russias etc., they though are poor but they are generally smart and do well at poker, and are often mind and so sport countries like those, and I have no problem beating them and enjoy playing them as they are good competition. But India is a completely different story and I might have to give some of the money back just out of pity. Academics, they generally do not have the instincts for beating the game at middle to higher levels and they often get bored and do well mainly a limit poker that there are not enough (stars that bans so many countries that one better forget all about limit poker) and the competition figures tougher then like when draw and 7-stud died it was all just no good.

i think universalizing a country is just wrong. obviously there are gonna be both good and bad players from india, as there are from all countries. any kind of poker boom is good cause its just gonna bring in a lot of fish and benefit everyone who plays...so good ****!

Not quite. Usually the smart ones that want to do it the right/legit ways have the hardest time getting papers. Are you at all familiar with US immigration laws or the different ways people immigrate to the US?
Just to give you a quick example, the US gov runs a green card lottery giving out around 50,000 green cards/year. Not much skill required there.

First of all, Indians who earn $3.5K/year wont play poker. Thats for sure.
Having said that, large % of people who have Internet in India earn around $15K+ per year. Living cost in big Indian cities is $8K at most. In other towns its even less. Not to mention that there is substantial population of Rich people in India, who have more money than american upper middle class.

Not all Indians are programmers and math wizards.People who say that there are no gambler in India...are totally wrong. Almost all Indians play some kind of card games. Sports betting is a very big problem there. Most people have an urge for gambling which could not be satiated because of gambling restrictions. However there is no law concerning Internet Gambling.

Is India becoming richer everyday? Yes. India Has seen a steady growth rate of around 8% in last decade. In 5 years the number of people with Internet will be very close to american population. Is this all good for poker? You tell me.

Well how about you educate us. :-) One thing that interests me is that is it possible, or shold I say how likely, that once online poker becomes big in India the government puts in some type of restrictions?

Successful restrictions in the next 15 years? ~0%. Indian politics is corrupt to the core. If there isn't substantial money for individual politicians out of doing something, it won't happen. Online poker will be way down on the list of priorities.

India is one of the most culturally diverse countries on the planet and 99% of the people in this thread probably know one Indian at school called Raj who works hard.

According to NVG they're brown, wear sandals and have pushy parents. Time to step away from your computer..

EDIT: http://www.pokertableratings.com/top-countries

Yes there are a few anomalies, but the general trend is: the richer the people the more they donate...

India has more millionaires than most European countries, and more than Russia. They do have a staggering amount of people in extreme poverty, and that distorts those statistics in this regard - they still have a HUGE amount of affluent people potentially interested in poker.

You could say the same of Russia and most of the East-European countries, but the odd oligarch donating to high-stakes doesn't matter a crap to 99.9% of players and it's the 1000's and 1000's of micro-limit grinders these countries spawn that turn the games to crap...

Not that I've got anything against these players and if I were in the same situation I'd be happily grinding my ass off too! But if you are a pro from a western country you can't possibly say this is gonna be good for the games, as there will eventually come a time when it's pointless to try and play for profit due to all these players cutting the market wage to something so low it's pointless for western pros to play any more...

You only have to look back at what India did to the freelance programmer market - good luck trying to compete with them if you live in a western country as they'll undercut you to the stage where working for 1/4 of minimum wage is +EV in comparison.
