If it's entertaining enough, people will play "gambling" games whether there is real money on the line or not.

Before there were casinos in my state and surrounding states, there were several places that had play-money blackjack tables. You had to pay real money to play and could not win anything of value but they were still quite popular.

Some places had a blackboard or other way to post the top stacks amassed by the players that they would update weekly or monthly.

There was a hotel directly across from Busch Stadium with such a table and, on game days, there was always a considerable wait to get a seat. I even saw people sell their seat to folks that didn't want to wait.

It was worth the $20 cost to have a seat in the crowded bar and have a pretty girl deal you blackjack.

There was even a strip club across the river that had topless dealers and the table was always packed.

I used to live in Japan, and they have several play money casinos there because gambling is illegal. They do run poker tournaments with prizes and entries into live tournaments in Korea, Macau, etc. but their cash games and pit games are all for play money that you have to pay real money for and can't convert it into anything.

They are banking because USA players cannot play for real money.

People have been using play money tables for home games or invitation games for ages. I know of at least one underground NY game that basically moved to play money tables on Stars.

People do put a ton of money into those bartop video games where there is no payoff except your initials on the high score board.

Play money poker tournaments have been going on in bars since the beginning of the poker boom because they were free to enter. Has died off quite a bit though.

I suspect that free play cash games for small prizes/fun/acknowledgement could be popular EXCEPT they would likely face similar opposition from the MAN because iits money and poker.

I was playing play money at pokerpages dot com, the owner(Napolitano?) came in and offered everyone a free $5 or $10 to go open an account at their real money site, bugsy's club; that's how I started a little while ago.

I dont know how big this is, but I played in a play money home game on pokerstars. It wasnt play money though. It was a cash game. The chips were play money chips on stars but the club owner had software that kept track of it all. At end of week you paid what you lost or collected what you won plus 75% rake back. I wonder since poker was banned if the rise in play money is bc of games like that?

I play it sometimes on a site with no prizes or anything real to earn, just entertainment.

Started w the $500 in chips they give you to sign up and now up over $10 million. It’s fun but way too many call pre-flop to use it for anything but entertainment (IOW you aren’t going to learn much about real poker other than the rules).

Believe it or not tho some people actually buy chips with real money....yep. Lotsa broke folks begging for chips too.

I don't know if you can still do this but I used to know a couple of guys who would agree to play heads-up for whatever amount (say, $100) and then play the match on Stars play money so they wouldn't have to pay any rake
