This is what's fascinating to me. Human's spend 1/3rd of their lives sleeping, yet we've only found a handful of things sleep is good for.

this is pretty crazy.

i remember when I was in college I took some adderall to cram for an exam. I ended up being awake for like 30 hours, and the images on my computer screen were 3d and moving

if you cannot die from sleep deprivation, does that mean that people can go decades w/o sleeping as long as they are well nourished?

You will have to be kept awake somehow, and whatever is to be used to keep you awake can kill you (exhaustion).

There haven't been any documented cases (to my knowledge) of humans dying from sleep deprivation. They've killed animals with sleep deprivation though. In fact, just denying lab rats REM sleep has killed them.

There have been documented cases of people dying from sleep deprivation. Usually by an genetic illness called Fatal familial insomnia.

How can you not die :e

I mean I thought 60+ hours of gaming / whatever is fatal and you can almost drop dead after 80+ hours.. how come they can be taking it so easy? And how dangerous is it?

I would think that at some point the damage to your body that you can only repair in sleep would endanger you. Or, what if you brain doesn't just suck at figuring out the pot odds, but also starts sucking at figuring out when you should breath in and breath out? All of this is conjecture, though, I'm not educated in that field.

He has doctors etc who advice him so its safe.

The gamers who died barely had anything to eat (especially quality food with vitamins and minerals etc) and also they were probably dehydrated.

There was a gameshow here in England called Shattered a couple of years back where the contestants stayed up for a week to win £100k or so.

100 hours is good work - nice one! - if really straight, but I do wonder about that drug provigil as mentioned above...

You can't really compare someone like Laak to some 20 year old kid who just sits at his computer all day drinking a ton of caffeinated drinks and eating poorly.
