Wow, nicely done... thanks!

For what it's worth, looking up the actual owner of that home (Roobian & Company) finds this:

That home is a dump. Looks like it hasn't changed or been remodeled once since it was built in 1974. It is a complete gut and remodel situation.

Hi Mason, unfortunately as you probably know that's not making money from Poker tournaments, that's making money from people stupid enough to make poor investments.

To be honest even with unrealistic markups they may still not have much of an edge if we factor in all the traveling expenses, rake and tax implications.

You would need a pretty big edge over the field just to be at the breakeven point in actual earnings.

First you have the rake, then you have the traveling expenses, then you have the unfavorable US gambling tax rules which are crushing in high variance pursuits such as tournament poker.
Those who have done well have normally spun their personas into sponsorship and promotional deals.
Good point. It probably makes tournaments very unprofitable long-term. The taxes will eat you up.

The fact that the mortgage is not being paid does not mean that Phil cannot personally afford to pay the mortgage. It means that he has chosen not to do so. That can be for a variety of reasons.

Other posters have identified the house is apparently not owned by Phil personally, but by and LLC in which he is a member. Generally, Phil is not liable for the debts of an LLC. He could make a contribution to the LLC to pay the mortgage, but there are various reasons why he would not want to do that. Clearly he has decided to just sell the house, and for whatever reason he decided or has been advised it is net beneficial to stop contributing money to the LLC to pay the mortgage.

Its not the payment of taxes that hurts you, its the fact you cant write off losses from previous years.

As an extreme example say you were..

2017 -$200K
2018 -$200K
2019 -$200K
2020 +$700K

Overall you are up +100K. but you have to pay taxes on the full $700K but cant write off the previous $600K in losses, meaning you lost overall over 4 years.....

I don't disagree with any of these observations.
There could be reasons he was given this financial advice.
There may also be some possible advantages of not paying a mortgage with possible mortgage relief programs on the horizon needing a period of non-payment.

Or it could be he is broke.... who knows?

So I guess when he said to Dwan you won’t be around in 10 years he was actually referring to himself.....

I know it's HU but I doubt Helmuth goes broke even HU anything other than Ak and JJ plus

Too lazy to search the exact time when its happening but phil going into that sandwich has to be one of his greatest moments ever. The giant hot dog should actually be replaced by that roastbeef sandwich

Chat GPT wrote me a nice little story.

Quote:
Phil Hellmuth, known for his remarkable poker skills and numerous World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, found himself in an utterly unexpected and surreal situation one sunny afternoon. As he strolled through a carnival grounds during a charity event, he stumbled upon a colossal, inflatable hotdog. The hotdog was no ordinary carnival prop; it was big enough to be ridden!

Always one to embrace life's quirks, Hellmuth couldn't resist the temptation. With his trademark bravado and enthusiasm, he decided to take the plunge and ride the giant hotdog. He had played in the biggest poker games and conquered some of the toughest opponents, but this was a challenge of a different kind.

As he climbed aboard the enormous hotdog, the crowd gathered, capturing the moment with their phones and cheering him on. The hotdog slowly began to roll forward, with Hellmuth gripping the bun for dear life. He maintained his composure, despite the unusual circumstances, showcasing his unshakeable focus and determination. With every twist and turn of the hotdog's path, he seemed to be in control, much like he would be at a poker table.

The carnival-goers watched in awe as Hellmuth rode the giant hotdog, displaying a mix of amusement and admiration for the poker legend. As he neared the end of his unexpected adventure, Hellmuth raised his arms triumphantly, basking in the cheers and applause of the crowd.

For Phil Hellmuth, it was just another day filled with fun and spontaneity, a testament to his ability to embrace the unexpected with his characteristic style and flair. While he may have conquered the world of poker, his ride on the giant hotdog was a reminder that life's most memorable moments often come when you least expect them.
