Most of those guys played the main back then and not much else. They didn't grind every event the way he did. Barry Greenstein has discussed this several times.
I mean think about it late 80s early 90s you're playing huge cash games and you're gonna stop to play these events when you have a table full of droolers ready to punt off 5/6 figures.
Look at Helmuth hendon AFTER he won the main.hes still out there cashing in tons of 300-500 dollar events. And back then they played 10 percent of the field in most cases. Even if he cashed in 25 percent he was still playing a ton of small tournaments while other guys were crushing high stakes cash.
And yea with it hard to learn since there were almost no resources someone like him playing more than everyone got really good at them.
