But man, its gonna be tough... I know Phil is smart and I'm sure he knows how much money he will have to sink into a new poker site like this and if he thinks it's gonna work, then I'm happy he's the one doing this. But I am kind of a pessimist on this... I wish him and the whole team the best of course!

If it's really going to be "only" a skin, then Phil can't do anything that he's talking about in OP.

He may not be sinking a dime.

EDIT: or #3, it's a skin of a current network like iPoker. My money is on #3.
Unibet did it in nine months with a small external dev team from scratch.

Joey you should adress this with PG.

One key to make this work could be to give players the old pokerstars feeling where they feel wanted and that the site listen to them.

They could gain a huge edge on competitors if they did rake PLO same amounts of bbs as NL (and a more healthy enviroment) = more fair PLO rake.

If PLO friendly influencers like Joey sold that message it would be very good for this new site.

thanks god! GL!!!

Sounds pretty awesome. I hope it succeeds.

Can anyone clue me in on why this is such great news? Are we expecting it to be Stars with lower rake? Won't reg infestation still be a problem?
09-01-2016 , 09:09 AM
with reasonable rake this could traffic some HS regbattling action from PS, but meh for lower stakes.

Hoping for teh best, expecting teh wurst.

Overall teh 1st good onlinepokerelated news in 5 years. If anything they might be able to force stars hand in rgds to rake if they implement something reasonable. Might give online poker a year or 2 moar. Im excited!

I suggest not to allow HUDs at the site and maybe have some basic built-in HUD with something like VPIP/PFR/3b/hands. Or not even that.

HUDs have nothing to do with recreational players. It's much better for reg to reg wars and even then i dont use much.

I think the focus should be leaving hud (it adds a strategic element to the game imo), and reducing number of tables?

Also, the biggest challenge is how they re gonna atract rec players. Because regs already know this exist (hence why HUDs should stay). But recs should have incentive to try this new site

I think that unless he is willing to open the site to US players the chance of success is going to be far less then it would if it was a site for US. The market is basically already cornered by stars, 888, ACR, and Ignition etc. Was very excited at first to hear the news but without offering US players into the player pool I have a hard time seeing this being a successful site. But best of luck to PG and hopefully one day they will be in the US along with the rest of online poker sites.

Basically gonna be all RIO type training video regs, all relatively competent poker players - so where are the fish coming from? You do all realise no games will run without fish.

Stating the obvious here but Mid-high stakes cash games on EU networks SUCK in comparison with say, Bovada. For the simple reason, nothing to do with the software/site/front man of the site, its that there are very few fish around and ratio of reg:rec is skewed heavily to regs. We all know the reasons for this, mainly because of stupid legislation & ringfenced countries but also because we are now post-boom and we are also in an economic slump compared to the boom era. I play and have played across a lot of sites at mid stakes and they are all pretty terrible and nothing like how it used to be or even close to what Bovada is, stating the obvious again. Without fish the games will be like Stars and 888, where not a single games runs unless a fish is there. The only positive is he could ban 3rd party software such as seat scripts and HUDs. Rake is obviously a factor but even then unless there is a clear edge, people aren't going to battle it out.

If this is part of an already established network like ipoker or Microgaming etc then just lol. I dont think hes stupid enough to do that so it wont be.

I was sort of hoping it would be an unregulated (but transparent to the players and run efficiently) US & ROW site kind of like a Bovada but open to all and partnered with a sportsbook, of course thats not going to happen unless all the owners want to end up in jail.

I cannot see how this would work. Being a 'nice' and 'respected' member of the poker community doesn't mean a new poker site in 2017 with all the aforementioned issues, will actually work. Sorry if that's a negative view and hope I'm wrong because I would love more options on where to play (if there are fish), so I do hope it does work out.

Many have died on the cross for trying to run a poker site. I wish him the best of luck

absolute grunch on my part , but

1) Phil Galfond comes across as top top both as a player and more generally as a human. wish him nothing but the best

2) aside from development efforts (whether you make or buy) unless Phil wants to run only in unregulated markets, then the licensing alone is a multi year endeavor, so unless he started that in 2014, Q1 2017 is fantasy land.

Question? Could someone own and operate a real money online poker site (skinned or not), operate in unregulated markets (what operators would could call "yellow market"), and remain a U.S. citizen in good standings ?

in galfond we trust
