Is knowing who Phil Galfond is a requirement to sign up?

No it is not, but it's a large incentive to sign up instead of the myriad of other poker sites out there.

For the regs it's huge, you need those to have a viable site, but it doesn't make a difference who owns it to the fun players. If they have a good marketing campaign, which seems likely, it should be just fine. If a site like Global Poker can attract a decent player base with meh software, catering to American's and Canadians, only paying out in Pay Pal, why can't Galfond? That site has more 10/20 than Stars at almost all times of the day. (Still wouldn't suggest player there, fwiw)

All it takes is intelligent advertising.

Genuinely curious why you wouldn't suggest playing on GP? collusion? lack of HH?

Because playing poker on a site paying out in PayPal to US residents is the dumbest thing you can possibly do.

Honestly 2+2 should be embarrassed for promoting these idiots, but money is money right? (As there is a big Global ad above me)(

Ronaldo got a red card from poker after visiting Palms, LV.

It is disrespectful to players that Galfond is still promising his site to start. Guess this way he gets a lot of free marketing for his coaching site. If he really starts the site, which seems quite unrealistic after what, 18 months of waiting, it will probably have strong "benefits" for Rio coaching members which should get the games going but afterwards they will just rake each other out to death.

But if it derails any regs from fishy sites I'll be happy.

Regulations and secure software aren't built in a day, my dude. Also, more cooks in the kitchen doesn't necessarily make for a better product. Be patient and I think it will pay dividends - Phil isn't the kind of guy known for rushing a good product. He's known for being a perfectionist and releasing a product that he and his development team will be proud of. The more time they have to develop the site I think the better it will be.

RIO Poker will turn the tide in online poker. It will be the best online poker site, and people will again love playing poker online.

Go Gandalf.

irrational exuberance but I'm down with it.

There needs to be an identity system to ensure that there are no bots at play, even if it means people can't play 20 tables at once.

I think that's the big tradeoff that needs to be made in order for no bots to be playing. Need to constantly prove your identity as a human player.

Something anywhere between this, and a Poker site just existing with decent GTE's, marketing and software - I'm ok with.

You'd only have to check people playing a lot/winning. Recreational players wouldn't be affected and I honestly wouldn't mind. It's actually long overdue.

Sounds good. Bots are only dangerous when they are crushing souls, but if we can beat them then their action is welcomed

I agree with that you said but for one thing, people still love playing poker.

If they get this up before May 2022 I think poker world wide will boom like never before.

I hope he brings the goods. Not only for there to be a good RIO poker site. But also to light a fire under all the other sites festering asses. Especially Stars, they have had things far too easy for far too long.

Sorry for total grunch, but what is Phil's most recent public statement on the status of this project?
01-16-2018 , 04:34 AM
The tweet screenshotted 5 posts up.

Yes, saw that obviously...thought there might be a more official / comprehensive update somewhere. What and when was the last statement of a substantive nature?
