I feel bad for Galfond but these types of stories are not new. Poker players are notorious for being "loose" with money. Dewey Tomko wrote about how he's been swindled for "investments" in the dumbest stuff you can think of, but that he we completely OK with and willingly "lent" money out. Galfond is just another name on a long list of poker players with zero money management discipline.

Is that it?

Also, didn't at least one of you used to do at least some of the same stuff?

easy for the multimillionaire to say we should out people that owe us money, but he didn't out this guy until he had exhausted every last resort including getting his big shot lawyers involved. nope not until he was 1000% sure he wouldn't be getting paid in full did he pen this article

pretty obv phil only wrote this piece in the hopes that if he went public he could shame this sammy fella into paying the other 200k.

And that's the smartest way to do it.. out him right away and your chances of getting paid go down significantly.

he also waited until the last second to out him because the guy is a losing player.

kind of like how everyone STFU when guy laliberte was playing on a bunch of accounts at rail heaven.

he wrote a well once though, so basically the nicest guy in poker.

Guy gives the degen money so the game keeps running and at first everybody benefits from it, except for the degen. In the end, after the guy doesn't get his cash back, his acquaintances are like "sorry bro, tough luck. didn't think that would happen".

Best rule ever (in gambling). I loaned $100 to a poker player once. Never saw the guy again. It's like he just vanished into thin air.

That was the first and last time I ever loaned money to a gambler. Incidentally, I never ask for money to play with. If I'm tapped for the day, I call it a day.

On a side note, I've loaned money to friends (non-gamblers) who've legitimately needed it to pay bills with. That's perfectly fine, you're helping out a friend in need. But loaning money to a degenerate ****ing gambler is throwing it away.

If you're the same person as the PKR reg with a similar name then you post about as intelligently as you play. If not, I apologise for interupting your NVG******ation session.

Peer pressure made him loan the money and peer pressure is making him refrain from outing more thieves. No wonder he was the mark.

Seems unprofessional of PokerNews to be getting involved in this

It's one thing to write a piece critiquing a Galfond blog or something, but hosting an op-ed is sketchy. We just ignore the sketchiness because Galfond is top trustworthy. This sets a precedent where any rando with debts can trash someone else after providing "proof"

Or to put it another way, do I really want PokerNews getting involved with covering personal beefs and debts? Definitely not. It's TMZ fodder.

What's Galfond's opinion on people who create challenges that involve hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, and then dodge completing them because they are too far in the hole to possibly win it?

This is what poker world deserve. There is a bunch of social pressure in poker to lend money to a "friend" or a known person. Every roll model in poker should have as a standard to not lend money to other players. So that the standard will become to not lend money to other player.
