Did this have anything to do with the Macau crew not playing the One Drop?

Andrew Robl AFAIK plays 90%+ of his poker at Aria in Ivey's Room where the Macau guys only drop by sporadically. How the hell is he putting up $1.5 million for bail for someone he can't know very well and doesn't make much money off of? I imagine the judge isn't going to let him play nosebleed poker while he waits for trial so there isn't much EV.

I'd say the real losers here are whatever Caesar's employees tipped off the police. They will surely be fired as Phua is a lot more important to the casino than they will ever be.
And why are you so sure they tipped off publicly? Caesar's might not even know who did that.

"Chesnoff said members of the poker community, including well-known player Andrew Robl, were gathering assets to help with Phua’s bail. Robl was prepared to put up $1.5 million, Chesnoff said.

Frayn, [the Assistant US Attorney], without citing names, said a number of Phua’s poker associates may have been involved in illegal activity uncovered by the FBI investigation."

This is going to get very interesting. Someone will name names in the poker community. Is Agent Marco on the case ?

FWIW, I still cannot believe that someone would engage in illegal bookmaking by moving into three suites AT Caesars and then request the hotel to provide electronics, access and hardware for their use. If that's true, was that arrogance or just incredible stupidity or does this say something else ?

I suspect that if any of this turns out to be true then this will be other Macau poker players rather than American ones. Americans don't need to be involved as customers having legal sportsbooks, and don't bring anything to the table as organizers.

What a bunch of idiots asking Caesars employees to get them all the electrical stuff they needed. Like that's not a red flag... They have all that money but no common sense.

The Macau gang probably won't be back visiting Las Vegas for a long time (if ever) after this.

These guys are involved in shady practices and profiting from them hugely? Then they try to use poker to launder the money clean and are almost freerolling? I am shocked

This seemed pretty unbelievable too.

I'd imagine, either some people at Caesars were in on this and only cooperated once the feds got involved, or the story isn't being reported by the paper and/or read by us correctly.

Probably one of the latter two.

Can't comment on the gambling stuff going on (or not going on), but any reference to 14K or mob stuff is a joke - “known by law enforcement to be a high-ranking member of the 14K Triad”. Really? Would like to see that documented somewhere formal rather than in some random comment. Anybody that knows Paul or Richard (which is pretty much all of Asia and Australia in the gaming space) including pretty much all the listed Vegas gaming operators that have business in Macau - Wynn, MGM, LVS (interestingly doesn't include Caesars as they have zero in Asia) know that this is simply not the case. Have known them both for 15 years plus and simply not true.

Phua was already arrested in Macau for massive bookmaking. And US attorneys aren't going to just make random comments in an indictment.

My guess is the feds are using the gambling charges to hold these guys while they investigate. The enormity of the sums involved trip all the alarms for money laundering.Gambling offense is a parking ticket compared to money laundering.

I suspect an 8 figure U.S.Government sponsored butt reaming will get these guys back to China eventually.Poor folks go to jail, rich guys pay up and go home.Just ask Howie,Jesus and Esai.

Yes they will. They'll try to make someone look as dirty as possible and throw out whatever they think might stick against the wall.

It'd be pretty sweet if the government would go after real criminals in the streets or handle the illegals streaming across our border by the thousands rather than throwing the book at some Chinese dudes with computers in a high roller suite. These guys are a threat to absolutely nobody, and for that matter are already facing charges in their own country. So WTF is the reason for all this?

I like to believe there was a time when government bureaucrats had more common sense than they do now. After all, isn't it *good* when a bunch of Chinese millionaires/billionaires come to LV with money? Forget what they bet amongst each other, our economy is going to see some of that cash at some point.

I mean, excuse me for not wanting to pay the ridiculous 10% vig that NV sportsbooks charge on my $51 million bet. LOL
