This question has been asked a ton of times. Obviously the family members can contact the reputable sites and get the money after providing documentation, etc. Obviously it's not clear what would happen with the sketchier sites, but presumably if you made enough of a stink they'd cave.

If a US citizen owns an individual brokerage account without a beneficiary designation and they die, the executor of their will has to go through probate proceedings in the decedent's state. (If there is no will, some next of kin will basically volunteer to be the "administrator" of the estate, and the court will assign them.)

Note that as soon as the brokerage company learns of the death, they restrict the account (no purchases, no transfers).

The probate court generates a "letter of testamentary" which states who the executor or administrator or the will is. That person gives the death certificate, the letter of testementary, and an affidavit of domicile to the brokerage company, to create a new account, registered as "Estate of xxxx xxxx" and the assets are moved from the brokerage account to the estate account. Then the executor can say who the money goes to and transfers it according to the will. So basically it's a lot of steps and takes time.

If you want to go through these steps with Pokerstars or Full Tilt, you may need to do all this before money can be sent.

However, I would say that if you know the decedent's password, it is simplest to log in to the poker site, and cash out all of the funds to the bank (to the decedent's bank account). When that's done, settle the bank account similarly to above. (If echecks is broken and you need an actual check, you then have the issue of depositing that check into the bank account without their signature...)

For FPPs, I'd say the simplest is to log in and buy stuff and use them up. Otherwise they will just be lost.

On another note: If you don't have a will, your assets will pass to your relatives according to your state's law. In New York, I think it goes 2/3 to spouse, 1/3 to children (split equally among children). If you don't have a spouse or children, it next goes to your parents. If no parents then next to your brothers and sisters, and then your neices and nephews. Next is your grandparents and then their descendents (your aunts and uncles, then your cousins). Then your great grandparents and their descendents...

On another note: If you die with a credit card balance in your own name, the credit card company will petition the probate court to get paid back. But if there are no probate assets, they pretty much just eat it. I think a magazine subscription company would just eat it once they find out; it's probably not worth it for them to petition the court unless you had a lot of subscriptions.

just changed my will. whoever is the one to oversee me affairs will simply log in to stars under my name, put all my money on one table, and then proceed to flip someone for the whole role. Either until im busto, or until my account sits with a pretty mill. That way I can say I was still grindin, even in death...

120 years from now all 6 billion people alive right now will be dead. They find dinosaur fossils from 350 million years ago. What did Russ Hamilton shoot on the golf course today? Birds are actually flying dinosaurs.

With lots of money online in non-traditional places, this is a problem that will be happening lots more than people think. From online poker sites, bookmakers, domain registrars, etc., there is a whole world of disaster lurking.

A real poker pro does not go broke. Insurance brokers, dentists, teachers, etc....these people don't go broke every other week. They are pros and have their important financial matters handled by their attorneys.

Would you rather be wealthy and have people think you were broke, or would you rather be broke, and have people think you were wealthy?

Low risk equals greater rewards long-term. You can argue that Warren Buffett's money has been less at risk than all others, and he has the most money. Short term....speculation can lead to great rewards or total loss.

Now honeys play me close like butter plays toast.
