But what about 9 Tony G's versus 9 Ben Lamb's (just talking personality wise, not poker playing skills, assume equal skill at poker)? I really disagree with the assertion Americans want to only watch Americans, and I'm talking the causal viewer here - but I do agree that outgoing, talkative people will appeal to the casual viewer much moreso than quiet types.
For example, compare Dirk to Pau Gasol - even before winning it all this year - Dirk was pretty damn popular and well known in America, Pau Gasol is nowhere near as recongized. It's why Phil Hellmuth keeps on getting invited to poker shows, and it's why Daniel Negraneau will pretty much always be considered one of poker's main faces - outgoing, talkative, charismatic personalities attract attention and viewers.
