Where have the "PRO's" gone? Where have the "PRO's" gone?

It seems year after year the younger generation of poker is starting to assert it's dominance and not only online. More and more "internet" pros and even young live players are taking more titles away from the games TV icons such as Negraneau, Chan, Brunson, Hellmuth, Ferguson, Cunningham, as so on.....
Has the game passed the legends by or is it just by chance that the older generation isn't coming away with as many titles since the younger phenoms have arrived and are multiplying daily? I do recognize some of these guys are continuing to have success it just seems like it is dwindling year after year.

i feel like all the pros you mentioned prior to the poker boom are becoming out of the picture and now the "pros" are all these younger online players playing live so i guess this is the current generations pros but im sure they wont be forgotten

The number of household name types may be dwindling but I don't believe they are being replaced by dominating youngsters. Poker is chock-full-of flavors of the month types. It's not the same 40-50 well known players and another 100 or so on the periphery players. It's thousands of players and each month we get another new name.

Most of these new, younger players, have zero personality. They come and go back into obscurity with hardly a notice.

Obv there are exceptions.

Happening to be at a few final tables that made it on TV in the midst of poker's most popular couple of years does not really make a legend.

you seriously think Johnny Chan will be "sitting on easy street" the rest of his life?

Playing golf/props/Chinese poker.

Hellmuth, Negreanu, Nguyen are all still doing well in tournaments, right?

Ivey, Juanda and Cunningham still seem to be doing well.

afaik, Esfandiari and Laak still make a decent living. Doyle does well in just about every televised cash game he's on.

They're still around. They just don't get as much 2p2 hype as the internet players (understandably)

i wanted to start a thread somewhat like this....

but i was thinking somewhat the opposite (in a way).

i was thinking very few guys have pushed into the real TV poker celebrity since early in the poker boom. i mean, esfandiari and laak are still on TV.... and most of the big names from early in the boom are still prominent. some of the moderate early names (ted forrest, cindy violette, dewey tomko) have faded away, but partially because there aren't mediocre poker series popping up constantly any more..... basically durrr and antonious are the two guys who've broken thru huge on TV since the boom was well estalished. have i forgotten anyone?

what was that horrible studio poker show where gus hansen went in every hand on a show because of the scoring system? they'd always show the standings with the 5 faces.

one thing to keep in mind is that pre-boom and early boom guys were beating pretty small fields and pretty small poker universes in those days........... now there are 10's of thousands of people who could conceivably win a huge tourney, if not many more (satellites etc.)

I don't think you can say DN/Doyle/Hellmuth are never on TV they are always on TV.

The rest are probably in Bobby's Room playing mixed games.

There are 10 or even 100 talented internet players for every seasoned live pro.

It's just a numbers game why you hear about them less.

Some like PH remain tight and irrelevant.

Cunningham is still one of the best 100 all around players in the game...I G U A R A N T E E that....

Laak was always kind of a joke...

Ivey who was the biggest young player in the world when Moneymaker struck, is now better than all the online players at their own game. PA is like almost 30....has been playing awhile, and started as a live player.

People dont play poker so they can play poker at the highest levels and grind like crazy forever....they play to accumulate a lot of wealth, and if they want to keep playing they play. I dont think a 20 yr old really has enough perspective to understand this.

Nowone wants to be putting in 400000 hands a yr or whatever every yr into their 30s and beyond.
