In the NYT article linked below, Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI) says that:

“during his short stay at Stanford, he learned more from the many nights he spent playing poker than he did from most of his other college activities.“

1960's Las Vegas is a very beautifully re-created setting in the chess movie Queen's Gambit. And the last episode - where Beth Harmon wins the world championship of chess in Moscow - is set in the very late 1960's, right around the time that Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, Doyle Brunson and other WSOP OG's were playing in the Texas Gambler's Convention in Reno. This event was the basis of what Benny Binion would call the World Series of Poker which was first played in 1970.

I think hoping and praying for Rounders 2 (along with hoping and praying for the Cincinnati Kid 2) is looking for the Next Great Poker Movie in the wrong place.

The Queen's Gambit 2 can be the key for the next great poker boom. After all, it boosted chess thru the stratosphere.

It could be a mini-series and it could begin with the main character finding his way to Nevada and getting victimized by the misogyny of the male players of the day. The poker characters would obviously be fictional but stereotypical with cigars and cowboy hats, etc.

p.s. There should be a poker movie containment thread.

queens gambit did that for chess, i remember how it gave me a new motivation and will to want to learn the game and get better. i could see this happening somehow with the right movie/cast or something, have netflix pick it up. it could help draw more people to poker, or it could be the opposite and a complete dumpster fire and nothing changes in the poker world. i forgot what they used to say, "any press is good press?", at least for the most part, good luck USA

Anybody playing with him in the USA?

Is HCL really not checking players credit and financial background? That seems incredibly irresponsible

Came to NVG to see if there was any discussion on this... pretty crazy. But yeah, I also wondered if it was thread-worthy or if it would get lumped into an HCL containment or Nik Airball containment thread.

I was playing earlier and at the same time I came up with some ideas to make poker more popular, here are the best ones:

1. A uk/european version of HCL, obviously shown earlier so as not to compete with HCL.

2. A new variant that is the same as holdem and PLO except it has 3 hole cards. It can also have subvariants where you have to use all 3 hole cards, have to use 2 hole cards, etc. I called this 3 Card Boast ©.

3. Instead of having chops, more rivers are dealt until there is a winner.

4. Some MTTs with the old pay out structures where less people get ITM but min cash is higher, 1st gets more and so on.

5. 27 or J4 game cash tables online.

Why would we need a new Godfather of Poker? Do we need a new Air Jordan once the one we have passes away?

Obv Moneymaker .. right? He ushered in a new era .. then Jamie Gold, eh? Nope ..

I don't think NASCAR is looking to replace Dale Sr .. ever.

While 'Godfather' is a taken/earned title in the mob I don't think that applies here. GL

None of these would increase my desire to play. And if you are trying to attract completely new players, most would not even notice or understand these.

1. Live streams are not the way to attract new players. Most hands are simply boring to watch.

2. PLO with fewer cards is the opposite of trends. 5 and even 6 card plo are the direction. Problem is any plo variant is likely to drain player funds before they develop, skills to make poker fun.

3. What if no possible river card can produce a river? What is wrong with chops? The newbie feels like he won.

4. Paying fewer places makes much harder for new players to win. If they don’t win eventually they go broke or get bored and quit.

5. Again, this favors the experienced player.

let me better explain the title, I am always seeing people on the poker scene using this brazilian portuguese term (mostly not brazilian guys) and I have no idea from where this thing started.

I mean, this is not a commom brazilian expression at all, at least from the place where I came from. And I just never saw anyone talking this thing and a lot of non-brazilian guys are always talking this all the time so I am bit curious to know from where all this ''vamooo" thing came from.

Seems like the Portuguese/Spanish-speaking equivalent of "LFG!", which isn't really in the general lexicon, but has been a thing in poker at times.

There's all sorts of funky poker-specific vernacular in English. It makes sense that other cultures would have their own.

It's not like "bink" and "rungood" are common words on the streets of Manhattan.

This is what I always figured it was.

Or maybe the equivalent of the Japanese "banzai" cry, despite it's historical connections. (No, really. You don't see any German player yelling sieg heil, and for good reasons, but the Japanese seem to get a pass on their history.)
