Just something which irritates the pedantic prick inside of me, would like to know your thoughts on the, clearly imperative, issue of the Royal Flush.

Discussion:

"A Royal Flush is not a rank* of hand & should not be discussed along side other ranks"

*By ranks of hand I mean the normal "High Card", "Pair"... "Full house" etc.

If it's not a rank of hand, what is it - a ****ing unicorn?

It's a hand ranking in the same way a wheel is. It denotes the highest straight flush.

It's like calling a A2345 straight flush a steel wheel. It's just a name for the hand but who cares.

Is a 9TJQK a royal flush too because all the picture cards are included? Or is the ace considered "royalty"?

OP is obviously right. A royal flush shouldn't be listed in the rank of hands since it is a type of straight flush.

Certain games with wildcards back in the day ranked five of a kind below a royal but above other straight flushes, so yeah, it can make a difference

So I guess video poker isn't real poker.

And I am sincerely NOT attempting a derail, but video poker is clearly a game of SKILL.

OP is correct. The name of the hand ranking is Royal Straight Flush

No, this thread is from 2006 - coincidentally I searched this earlier today to find the definition of the "Chronos Hand", which is 4 times rarer than a royal flush and therefore should rank even higher.

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=396290

BTW clearly royal flush is just another kind of straight flush in the standard rankings with 8 types of combination and one type of "nothing" (which for some reason is called high card rather than "nothing").

This thread exemplifies why there should be a minimum post count to create a new thread. Although it is sometimes humorous seeing these worthless threads from users with total post counts between 1 - 10.

I apologise for misjudging the type of content the NVG forum is for. I hope it's clear my thread was meant as a provocative, but fun post and not as crap intended to dilute the forum. I will take more care to ensure my posts are correctly placed from now on.
