If he knew one of the guys he could probably get in.

They don't want (non-famous) pro's in there - it makes a lot of sense.

So the trick is to learn chinese and some chinese jokes, getting 100K and a nice suit, and maybe some sunbathing.

There's some exclusion of foreigners but it's not so much racism as excluding outsiders. After all, these guys are Chinese speakers and Chinese people. Even if they speak great English, it's only understandable that they want to spend their recreation time with other Chinese people who speak Chinese. None of them wants to deal with having to translate the table talk/jokes for the foreigner every hand "ho ma lan chat fan". But on occasion they'll invite good players to join them, if the guy is known and will provide good action or entertainment.
the guys want to play pokah the casino will do whatever the whales want, I've heard stories from dealers of people playing 5000-10k NL in Melbourne in the VIP rooms

its because the whales gamble 200k/hand @ baccarat/bj which at a rough edge of 1.5% is 3k edge per hand, and a hand takes what, like what 30 seconds max so u figure it out

120 hands/hr at 3k edge per hand on avg = a lotta poker room rake...

When I was there around Jan/Feb the players in the 100/200 game told me of some young guy (Sandanavian possibly) who had learnt the language and was allowed to play in the huge game at the Stardust, he was reportedly up an absolute fortune. All hearsay, the games in Macau were no where near as good as I expected though, full of Korean nits.

lol. There isn't a single white guy in town that has learned the language. It's impossible.

But the two brothers you are talking about were at the right place at the right time. They arrived when the 500-1000 and 1000-2000 games just started and no one knew what they were doing. They went from grinding 25-50 to playing huge in a matter of weeks. That was pre-reserved game though, when every day had the potential for huge games...it just depended on who walked thru the door.

Capped at 200 HKD everywhere, but Starwold caps at 300 for bigger games.

I've been here two years, and I know three Caucasians that speak Chinese. My point is, there isn't a poker player who came here and just happened to pick up the language. That is impossible.

Im curious why you say it is impossible? If I was going to try and play in Macau for a living, I would def want to learn the language. I can speak some mandarin, not cantonese, and I constantly hear other Chinese talking about a hand when they shouldnt. The dealers never really say **** either and let the players continue talking during the hand when they really shouldnt be. Alot of times they talk **** about foreigners right in front of there face without the foreigners even knowing.

The game moved back to the Starworld and Ivey, Dwan, and Giang were in the game again. I have not heard any news on the swings today except that Chau was winner.

Tom and Ivey are most likely heading to Phuket after this to chill out at Apt owner Chris Parker's place.

i do have a couple of photos taken incognito, they're uploaded on my fb, nothin interesting really(no photoshop potential). this site has some shots of the players here in macau. http://www.theasianpokertour.com/

my friend ivan commented about one of the hands played,

Just witnessed a huge pot between Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan in a high stakes cash game here at the APT macau. Here are the details.

These were the few know players that were players, the rest i have never seen before.

Dwan, Ivey, Chau Giang, Jon Juanda.

Blinds were 5k/10k HKD

Anyways here was the hand.

Ivey straddles to 20k
Dwan double straddles to 40k.
MP calls 40k
Ivey completes the 40k
Dwan maskes a raise to 180k total
MP folds
Ivey re-raises to 1million alomost all-in
Dwan instant gos all-in
Ivey snap calls
Pot is approx 3M HKD
Hands Ivey ATos, Dwan 77
Board runs out, no Ace no Ten. Dwan ships the 3Million Pot.
When i left he was up about 3.5M HKD
And to mention he was happily drinking beer.
this guy knows whats up

Obviously I only played 10/25 and 25/50, but I speak fluent Chinese, and two other white guys I know also speak it fluently. That's three right there - I'm sure there are a lot more than you think who speak the language. Before this post, did you know that I could speak it?

Im sure there could be 10.000 player found in the pokerworld who would invest 100 each to stake dwan in a game against business fishes if properly advertised.
Imagine the excitement of investing $100 and waiting for the return. Who knows if Durrrrr crushes you may get back $200 or even $300. I couldn't stand the tension...

I'm sure you're right Squibz, how long have you been here (HK right)? I guess my original point was trying to difuse the myth that the Scandi players came over and got in the good games because they learned the language.

My original post was a bit unclear. I meant I haven't met an outsider who came to Macau to play poker that has picked up the language.

End derail...

Wow. I've read some stupid things but this is astounding.

There's actually a ton of white guys who speak great Cantonese playing poker around Macau. I can think of at least a dozen who speak better than me. Then there's a lot that have some mandarin skills. There's also hundreds/thousands of expats in Hong Kong that have learnt Cantonese.

Impossible?

If some white kid wants to make it in Macau, how would you start?

Im not talking about the big games, but the ones that let you allow to make a living. 2-4, 5-5 NLHE and higher. Do they run frequently and are you getting action when sitting down and being a foreigner? What does it cost to rent an apartment? Are there other things to do besides gambling? Like fun stuff while being a feoreigner who doesnt speake the language. Is it easy to meet people .? Does the government allow you to stay for a while? rules concern visa. Is it easy to take money out of the country? Like easy to deposit on own foreign account? Maybe the last question is a but stupid, but i have no clue whatsoever..
