Everything is so superficial and watered down now. To me, it's like the difference between a really good HBO series and whatever garbage they decide to put on ABC on a Wednesday night.
I guess I just don't really want such a direct example of how much worse the movies of today are. Watching The Mechanic with Jason Statham and comparing it to the Mechanic with Charles Bronson is super depressing to me. And the icing on the cake is knowing that a whole bunch of people watched the Jason Statham version when they've never seen the Charles Bronson version and are probably never going to see it.
Every time I'm scrolling through the guide on the TV and see Dawn of the Dead on, I have to check it out and see if it's the 1978 one or the 2004 one. The 78 version used to be on every once in a while. Now it's exclusively the 2004 one. It's been at least 5 years since I've seen the original on TV. ****ing infuriating.
Yeah I get that that bothers you, but I think if the remake didn't exist the programming would inevitably be replaced by some other movie instead. I don't think there is a ton of "lets play movie X in this time slot... oh there's a newer one? Ok use that instead" going on, even though it can seem that way.
I also think that today there are all kinds of movies being made all over the world, more than in any other time period. Mainstream hollywood might not line up, but there are plenty of options out there - including old movies!
