I think Reynolds is suppose to be your stereotypical "degenerate gambler". Someone who's looking to lose. Which explains why he challenged their best guy to a 1 on 1 game and didn't hand the money over when he lost. Simply handing the guy $100 wasn't thrilling enough. He had to up the stakes, and decided to lie about not having the money to make the situation more exciting. He wanted some action, and he found it!
ding ding ding. Also, I feel like there was some degree of self flagellation brought on by how he lied to Mendelson about the horse race results.

Jake Gyllenhaal was originally casted to play the Ryan Reynolds' part. I think it would have been a much better movie with JG. Ryan Reynolds, despite having some acting chops in this movie, just oozes cheesiness.
Agree to disagree. I think Ryan Reynolds was perfect for the part. The cheesy, irreverent, cocksure attitude he brings is perfect. Jake would have been good as well, but not as good.

Maybe he was? Probably not though.
