Saw this in a theater. Aside from the fact they used generic walmart chips for supposed high stakes games the movie itself wasn't bad. What makes it bad is that its like 40% montages of the city they are in.

Literally some of the cities the montage is longer than the scene(s) in that city. It would have been a mediocre bordering on good gambling movie, but appears to have been butchered by whoever edited it.

Apparently they were using the pokerstars chips you buy using FPPs in the high stakes cash games in Macau involving Durrrr

Never understand why someone can't take 5 minutes and post on chiptalk asking to rent a custom chipset.

Someone from chiptalk would probably show up and lend them a custom set of chips for free.

Thought he was going to rip off RR for sure at the end.
Ps Wasn't his tell tape "wrong" i thought when someone is laughing and looking relaxed they're strong but the film had it opposite. I don't play live so know nothing about it, but i remember Stave Daneman looking relaxed and joking when he had a set and Joe Hachem laid down top top.
Sounds like a typical purist to me. God bless the purist

that movie was one of the better gambling movies. soundtrack was 9/10. the song they wrote for the movie when his mom was playing guitar at the end was def. a well writen song. just a bad ass degen movie. IMO way better than the gambler. i couldnt stand that pretentious nonsense.

Not only don't they allow links, there is a sticky on one of the boards here that says if you even mention the T word you could get banned.

Enjoyed the movie but could of been a lot better, like others said, ending was terrible.

Would have been more fitting and moving for bens character to have comitted suicide or something.

Yeah but they had the exact same "happy ending"

I always like a good happy ending.

Might watch this movie also

That was a nice little enjoyable movie. Ostensibly it's about gambling, but themes revolve around addiction, the difficulty of changing oneself and the complex dynamic of a male friendship. Like many reviews have said, it's an homage to 70's road movies.

That ending wasn't necessarily a happy one.

Spoiler:
Curtis problem was that behind his gregariousness lied a lonely man who had a difficulty developing deep connections and settling down. Throughout the trip he struggled to come to terms with his feelings for Simone. The night they got lucky at the craps table, he gave her a call and told her that he loved yet. And yet, next morning, as he wakes up, Simone is calling him and he ignores her. As he gets up, we see another woman in bed and as he leaves, he flirts with the receptionist and tries to take her with him to Machu Pichu.

That's not a happy ending. That's not a man who grew from his latest adventure and became better. He remains unchanged and he's burning bridges with the woman who might love him for who he is, as he's chasing rainbows in far away places.

In fact, the film had a bit of a twist in the end, because as I was watching Gerry get up and check the safe with all the money, I had a feeling of dread that he was going to degen all that money in craps again. And yet we see him buy his old car back and placing his daughter's picture on the visor. We cannot be sure that Gerry isn't going to fall of the degen wagon, but as we leave him, we see a man who's grown and who's trying to do the right thing.

Was hoping for more after seeing that it was written by the guy who did Half Nelson. I thought Ryan Reynolds did a pretty good job relative to my expectations. Ben Mendohlson is phenomenal in Bloodline but I thought he was just okay in Mississippi Grind.

Definitely straight to DVD. I can't take Ryan Reynolds seriously after Van Wilder and he appears to have no range as an actor. Dude needs to stick to romantic comedies costarring bimbo C-list actresses.

Ugh, I wouldn't recommend. Not really poker-centric.

Thought Mendelsohn and Reynolds' performance were good but the whole storyline was meh. The scenes with the girlfriends dragged.

The original ending had the Mendelsohn character starting a 2+2 thread titled "Moving to Las Vegas with $1000, Wish Me Luck!" but the test audiences found it too depressing.

Lol at them stopping at Southland. The dog track in West Memphis. No live poker there, only Poker Pro. I've never been to a more depressing casino and I've been nearly everywhere in the United States.

I liked it. I loved how Mendelsohn's character lied about basically everything, right from the start - "How'd you do in the tournament?" "Second place" then "Oh I got third", then later using his mugging as an excuse when the reality is he was broke anyway. I'm guessing most people on 2p2 know someone like that. I actually thought there were a number of curveballs or scenes that didn't play like I expected. Things went south a lot quicker than they usually do in these movies. I really thought the dice roll was gonna go the other way. And yeah, I was expecting a Trainspotting moment in the end. Agree that it's not really a 'happy ending', can't imagine he's holding onto that money for long.

As for Reynolds, he was pretty good, but his character was weird. Like half the time it felt like he was just a dude that fell from the sky, or maybe was just a weird figment of Gerry's imagination somehow, and then the other half he's got some kind of backstory.

Yeah i googled "best gambling movies" the other day and downloaded The Gambler (1974), California Split, Croupier, Pope of Greenwich Village, Bob le flambeaur, and hard eight.
Alright had stuff like the Cincinnati Kid.

First one i watched was Hard Eight.

Spoiler:
Like MG out of nowhere an angel appears and takes this loser under his wing and mentors him but at least in Hard Eight we find out why - he killed his father. Yeah it's contrived and not really a gambling movie but it's ok i guess. Great performance from Philip Baker Hall and I never thought john C Reilly was ever young but he is in this.

In MG we have no idea why a guy like Reynolds would hook up with a guy like Ben.

The movie was ok.
Obviously watchable because of content
I at least got that feeling of how gross it is just losing all ur profits. And just being in around so much degenetivness . I know it's not a word but it should be.
I got some of the feeling I got from watching owning Mahoney.
Anyway. It's good enough to spend 5 bucks on and use an hour and a half of ur life on. Not good enough to do it twice

Mostly the realism is ok-ish, but I had trouble suspending my disbelief when he showed up at that home game, not knowing a soul, and immediately asked to be put on the books to get in action. It wasn't a great movie by any stretch, but I don't regret having watched it. Faint praise I guess, but...um, ya.
