Pro bono legal work is for the benefit of indigent (poor) people. I kind of doubt you qualify.
Truth is a defense to defamation as I'm sure you already know judging by your post. Libel (printed v. spoken defamation) is bit harder to defend than slander because general damages are presumed. The good news is that when the defamation (either variety) involves a matter of public concern, the plaintiff must prove, in addition to regular elements, (1) falsity of the statement (burden shifting) and (2) fault on the part of the defendant.
As far as people with dirty pasts, character evidence is generally not admissible in a civil case. But where character is directly in issue, such as in a defamation case, character evidence is admissible. So you can basically trash Chief Joe in court (in good faith) and the media will pick up on all of it.
There is pretty much no chance they are going to risk their business by attracting the negative attention that would come with a lawsuit.
