This movie isn’t a success.

Budget $30MM.
BO: $30MM
Studio keeps half.

They will need to make $15MM+ aftermarket just to breakeven.

This would have drastically changed had they garnered Academy nominations and even a win. They took that gamble by doing a limited-release in December. Out missed.

So far (besides the US) it's made about 14 million overseas.. Not sure how much it will make on DVD and Netflix but remember Rounders didn't do that hot at the box office but made 70 million in DVD sales. This might be the kind of movie that is more enjoyable to watch at home rather than sitting in a theater for 2 hours and 20 minutes.

If I had to give reasons why it is not a big hit I would have to refer to what one critic (Matthew Bond in Event Magazine) said: It's "Too long, Too wordy, and for poker novices Too complicated." I also believe the characters aren't the type that will appeal to the average Joe.

It got an Academy nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. A Best Actress nod would have been nice, though.

This ain’t Rounders and there are no more DVD sales. Netflix doesn’t pay anywhere near what DVDs made.

This movie desperately needed a few big Academy noms.

Ironically, for widespread success, it suffers from exactly what they spend a lot of time talking about - too many anonymous players, and not enough naming names. If the tagline of the movie was "How Hollywood stars like Tobey Maguire and Ben Affleck played poker for millions" I think you'd have seen a much more mainstream audience.

I see plenty of DVD's on the market in stores...not everyone wants or uses Netflix or similar services and there are also selections that Netflix has chosen not to make available.

There are still DVD sales but it’s a shrinking market, and this movie isn’t going to have anything close to Rounders’ impact and aftermarket revenue. Rounders heyday was during peak DVD sales and the poker boom.

Some Disney/Pixar movies still make good DVD revenue but that’s shrinking as well.

MG might break even or make a few bucks, but it’s not going to be a big success. Enough to let Sorkin direct again, basically.

Yeah, the DVD is not dead yet, and LOL there are even a few Blockbuster stores still open.

And the below link says:

Molly's Game DVD and Blu-ray release date is estimated for April 2018 and available on Digital HD from Amazon Video and iTunes is estimated for March 2018.

I guess so. I don't think the Alaskan market will propel Molly to profitability.

The movie was doing terrific on a per-box-office metric, breaking the $5k mark per theater. There was an outside chance of Best Movie, Best Director, or Actor/Actress nom. It needed to hit just one to start flooding the trades. It bricked. Game over for movie, Sorkin and genre.

Blockbuster isn't extinct quite yet.

At least 10 Blockbusters are open across the US — a minuscule percentage of the 9,000 stores that existed in the early 1990s, The Washington Post reported. The biggest cluster of Blockbuster locations that remain open is in Alaska.

I don't think there was any obvious character in the movie modelled after Affleck.

I don't think Tobey Maguire himself is much of a draw these days.

Agreed, and that was the problem.

The movie was about Molly and how unfair she was treated. The general public might watch that, but they need a lot more titillation about "oh and by the way, Ben Affleck lost $5M in the game" and Tobey Maguire was the godfather bluffing people for the purpose of destroying their lives.

For those who think the movie was too long, and I kinda agree, what should they have cut? Some of the childhood and father stuff maybe?

Not only was it long but there seemed to be constant voiceover or dialogue. I read one comment that there wasn't 5 seconds of screen time that went by without someone talking. That was probably an exaggeration but I can understand the comment being made.

Grunching:

What am I missing here. They spend the entire movie focusing on her NOT naming the names to keep her integrity or whatever...but in the ACTUAL book (apparently not the fictitious book referenced in the movie) she DOES name ALL the names. Are they just hoping everyone is too lazy to read the book? The movie was entertaining but the entire thing makes almost 0 sense in the context of the actual book.

It's (that is, Aaron Sorkin is) nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. The book did drag out the legal proceedings a little too much. What else has that actress been in, she looks familiar.

Obviously the celebrities in the game probably wanted to keep a low profile while the game was active and it was just common scense that Molly and her boss not blab to everyone about the game and who was in it. Why risk pissing off the celebrities and even discreet wealthy individuals. They had a gravy train going, Don’t **** it up.

But all that probably changed when the game closed down. Now the big bucks stopped coming in. This is the point when Molly and later a publisher probably realized hey we can make some money by naming the big names that were in the game and any quirks they might have. At this point it looks like integrity took a back seat and dollar signs took over. With the book and the movie deal it looks like Molly got the gold and people like Tobey got the shaft.
