89 percent of the audience liked the movie.

82 percent of the critics liked the movie.

A Farm Fresh tomato movie.

I enjoyed the movie and so did the other two poker players who saw the movie with me.

Critic Consensus: Powered by an intriguing story and a pair of outstanding performances from Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba, Molly's Game marks a solid debut for writer-director Aaron Sorkin.

Saw the flick over the week-end with 2 non-poker people. We were very entertained and discussed several aspects of the movie afterwards. Overall, a solid well-written and acted movie.

Thought Costner had a great role for him & played it well. The "3 years of therapy" in 3 minutes was a bit too convenient to explain her points but did tie several earlier scenes into context.

STXfilms/eOne/Mark Gordon Company’s Molly’s Game is also higher, now filing $7M in its second weekend in 7th, ahead of Focus Features’ Darkest Hour which earned $6.4M. As we mentioned earlier, this is a better wide break than all the other indie films that the industry has deemed as successes, i.e. Wind River, Hell or High Water, and The Big Sick. STXfilms wanted to care and nurture this critically acclaimed Aaron Sorkin film; not bust it so wide like Uni did with his 2015 scripted Steve Jobs that it would be deemed a failure, especially during the epicenter of awards season. Steve Jobs made $7.1M when it wide at 2,493 theaters with an average of $2,4K and Molly’s Game is better with a double that average at $4,3K: The movie is essentially making more than Steve Jobs and in fewer theaters. At $14.2M in weekend 2, the Jessica Chastain pic is close to eclipsing the entire $17.7M domestic B.O. of Steve Jobs. STXfilms is on the hook for P&A and a $9M acquisition cost for U.S. and China. Molly’s Game is up for best screenplay and best actress drama Jessica Chastain at the Golden Globes. Heading into Oscar noms, the movie currently touts a PGA and WGA adapted noms; which some other pics like Focus Features’ Phantom Thread cannot.
From this weekend.

This is the same attitude that losers have when complaining about any "lucky winners." She did what it took to put herself in a position to win/succeed, like any successful risk taker/entrepreneur. She also paid the consequences that came with those risks.

Good looks and being well dressed help women and men alike in almost any career or business endeavor.

I'm no SJW or white knight, but **** off with this loser attitude. Step up your game -- women might actually start liking you, and you'll stop harboring resentment toward them.

Saw the movie last week. Really enjoyed it and beat my expectations going in. Only negative is it relies heavily on narrative. Really enjoyed the circuit blowing up analogy of someone going on tilt.

Didn't say she was a role model. Seems pretty strong and independent, though.

Saw it yesterday at 5.30pm in Dublin, Ireland; despite it being an early showing inconvenient to most people still working (I got out of the office at 5pm luckily) the theatre was about 1/2 full, which was better than I would have expected. I was with a non-poker player and we both enjoyed it, though thought it was perhaps 20 minutes or so too long, seemed to drag a good bit at the end. Jessica Chastain is obviously an extremely pretty woman but maybe a little old to believably play the early-20s Molly in the skiing and waitressing scenes?

I watched this a few days back.
Really enjoyed it.
Obviously the story will be changed a fair bit to glamorise it more but I'm ok with the Hollywood effect.

Good job.

Saw it today. I thought it was okay.

The good: The movie is well paced, did a good job of putting the viewer in a place and time, and well acted.

The bad: The narrative relied way too much on "telling" the story rather than "showing" it. The characters had very quick and cliched psychological revelations instead of more natural character development. The story was in many ways a big red herring: the whole point of the movie was building up to an unfair racketeering charge when in the end all she was charged with and plead guilty to was raking a home game. I got the impression that it was the salaciousness of the names involved rather than narrative arc or character development that got the movie made.

Also, how much you like Aaron Sorkin's dueling-argument dialogue will influence how much you like the movie.

Just my opinion...

Read the book years ago and really liked it. Thought the movie was complete garbage. If you love hearing about women empowerment for 2 hours and 20 minutes this is your jam. The stories and atmosphere of the big private games with celebrities and athletes was what made the book enjoyable to me. I find her own personal story to be just way over the top self indulgent and she is not nearly as interesting nor intelligent as she thinks. Also thought just about every scene with Kevin Costner, especially the ice skating, was just completely cringeworthy. Jessica Chastain has now proven that she can be the smartest woman in a room full of dumb men again. Stringer Bell is the man, but his part almost felt overacted. I am not sure why a big NYC lawyer finds this strong of an investment in one random client.

I definitely tend to be more critical of movies where I really enjoyed the book, but there was no saving this for me. My friend and I were 1 of only 5 people in the theater and there was multiple groans from each of the 5 people, although I did break into loud laughter at how bad that skating scene was.

I also read the book, but I had a completely different take on the movie. I really liked the movie and thought it was really well done. The ice skating scene at the end with Kevin Costner I thought was also well done and I liked it. My cousin who doesn't know anything about poker also liked it.

My favorite scene was when the character Harlan Eustice got bluffed by the player Bad Brad and then proceeded to unravel and go on tilt.

Its not as good as Rounders, lets be real but its right up there in my opinion in terms of poker movies.

Lucky You was complete garbage. Worst poker movie ever.

I wish they had stuck to the book a little bit more, for instance it would have been easy to have a 1min throwaway scene where 'Player X' offers Molly 1k to "bark like a seal".

I went last night with two poker buddies (one also a film buff), and we all enjoyed it.

But I actually found that tilt scene hard to believe as I thought a player like Harlan would never go on tilt to that extreme, at least not for more than a few hands. However, if Molly says so ...

I disagree about the fish that folds the nuts being completely unrealistic. The suggestion was that as a tyro he was feeling completely overwhelmed and not thinking clearly.

And while it may be hard to believe that Molly was such a stand-up about not naming names, that's also what makes the film. Without that question at the centre I don't think it would have much drama. (One of the lessons of the film is how brutally the US government can destroy someone through asset seizure and tax prosecution to compel them to testify.)

She knew what she was doing was illegal at the end when she finally started taking a rake, but as her dealer / friend had pointed out, she's one step away from losing the game to bad debts at that point so she needs to cover herself. I think she was very naive in not seeing the Russian Mafia's involvement in the New York game (and also in thinking that saying No to the Italian Mafia's request for a piece of the action would be a simple act). Of course, as she says, she was doing drugs at that point to keep herself functioning on that insane schedule and probably wasn't thinking clearly.

So the real message of the movie may be: "Stay off drugs, kids. Especially at the table."

Oh, and that reminds me of the funniest scene in the movie--where the FBI is reading her transcripts of phone-taps to show her that they know of her extensive involvement and they tell her, "See. People keep saying things like 'Bring Molly with you'". And she has to explain to them that Molly is the street name for E.

I agree with this, seen complete amateurs fold all sorts of monsters to pressure of the moment. plus at those stakes its even easier to get in someones head. Saw phil ivey fold the nuts once, misread his hand and believed the other player. Loads of reasons this could happen.

I thought the movie was excellent, it wasnt a poker movie, it was a movie with lots of poker in it. Thought the raise thing was fine also, didn't need to make sense from a poker perspective, I would probably of missed it, had I not known to look out for it. She was a delight to look at too. When she walks out in the dress and asks for everyones attention.... she already had it.
