Regarding the bluff hand. I thought I saw the hand the guy folded as botttom boat, not the nuts. And didn’t the Toby McGuiree character even swear he had QQ for top boat?

Seems others here think he folded the nuts. That would be absurd.

FWIW I was disappointed in the movie. I’m a big Sorkin fan. It was no Social Network, that’s for sure imo.

Not unless you also got hit with asset forfeiture order for six figures...and federal probation is different from the typical community supervision. There are real consequences when you screw up a federal term...

I think pissing off the wrong people by testifying may be the unknown factor.

i find it funny none of you said a work of why she lost the game in LA, telling a player that playing out of the same bank roll is cheating or what ever she said it was not good for the game, and not to do it, is it her place to tell players not to play out of the same bank roll?

read a couple articles after seeing the movie. this little excerpt from the book is absolutely amazing. rick salomon is a legend.

'Rick Salomon showed up next. Rick was hot. He was crass and dirty, but he was still hot in a caveman kind of way.

I pulled him aside to show him the board.

“Wow, they are swingin’, huh?” he said, looking down at me. “Wanna ****?”

I looked back at him, praying my face wasn’t as red as it felt.

“No thanks,” I said, as casually as if he had asked me if I wanted a Tic Tac.

He laughed.

“Give me $200,000.” '

The really relevant part here is the availability of the FULL term available to the Court given that prison was not a part of the original sentence...which I believe is a five year term given the conviction here for Illegal Gambling.

Contrast that with a local pot charge where a failed supervision generally gets you three days with credit for the day spent after the arrest, making it a time-served revocation decision. In other words, NO REAL CONSEQUENCE.

Saw it tonight - had high expectations but was pretty thoroughly underwhelmed and this is coming from someone who loves Sorkin's stuff and has seen literally everything he's written (listed on IMDB, anyway). I imagine the book is a ton better and I'm not one of those people that just always says that about every book/movie combo.

Actually, we should know more after this weekend because "today" it opens in 1600 theatres. The last 10 days it's been in only around 270 theatres. The very cold and snowy weather across the country probably won't help.

Where are you getting from that info that the movie is a bomb? Someone else said the per screen total was very good.

$7 million is a bomb but the poster above is right. I didn't account for the number of screens and checking on Monday/Tues will give a better idea of how the movie's doing.

Think they were projecting to make around 6m this weekend which some had estimates it'd make 7. Budget on the movie was only 30m.

Did they even do a TV campaign for this movie? I only saw a few bus stop ads around LA, and I'm guessing that's to advertise the movie to voters and not actual movie goers. (I'm assuming FYC ads are not a thing outside of LA)

$7M on a limited release is hardly a bomb when that is above the theatre average. Underwhelm? Possibly. Bomb? No.

As noted, the theatre I viewed it in north of Houston was sold out in a matinee showing save for the few seats in the first row where you screw your neck up trying to see anything on the screen.

It’s a good movie since Molly is an interesting character, but it doesn’t really celebrate poker in any way. Seems like half the movie is just about weathering the storm of ******* players. Molly’s participation in the whole ordeal is explained/justified as a result of her childhood and failed ski career, not say, for the fun or awesomeness of it. At the end of Rounders, Matt Damon’s character basically says **** law school I’m going to win the World Series of poker, this movie seems to have the opposite sentiment.

I agree with most of the comments ITT, and a couple of the poker-related errors were annoying (just like any movie/story where you know the actual subject material), but I really enjoyed the movie. As did my non-poker-playing GF.

I was expecting it to be lighter and have more to do with crazy behind the scenes stories than the psychology of the main character. But I’m not saying I feel swindled or anything, overall I think its more serious tone made it a better movie, it just didn’t need to treat poker so cynically in the process.
