I actually didn't find this crazy; thought Teddy was supposed to be on tilt and bluffing.

Wasnt it the first hand of the session?

Yeah, almost positive you're right. It goes with the whole "a new man, won't be pushed around" line.

However, you could use KGB's tilt to explain the sizing on very last hand, in which Mike D check-called the nuts all the day down. KGB "bets it all" on the river, which is something like 2x pot. But "Big Daddy bet the pot" on the turn.

All this said, for all I know larger bet-sizing was more common back then. Seriously, go watch the first season or so of the WPT, or watch the WSOP ME coverage from the same era. Some of the play seems foreign to our 2017 sensibilities, and yet that was apparently standard play for its time. In short, it might not be a technical error from a film-making standpoint at all.

Had almost a completely full theatre at a screening just north of Houston...I had a single seat available outside of the first row and I was buying in person 20 minutes before lights were supposed to go down. And this was for a 2:45P showing...

Demographic was mostly skewed older, so the legal thriller direction obviously reeled people in since they were not the typical poker crowd.

Movie dragged in places but I enjoyed it...I can see why poker purists may not care for it, but you cannot please everyone.

For everyone who is critiquing the bet sizing of Rounders: I've played in social home games where people open shove for 50x bb (500 with 5/10 blinds) after a couple limpers. Or open to 25 in a 1/2 game.

Many recreational players don't know 99% of the terms thrown around on these forums (variance,ev,cutoff, hijack etc...)...at least the ones I've played with.

NL/PL poker has changed dramatically in the past 10 years...when I watch on TV, it seems that very few bets are surprising and truly creative - frankly 90% of the time it feels like limit poker!

When Teddy's cards fly off the table you can see he flopped top set. I always gave Rounders points for attention to detail there.

This is a myth. He throws the stub and one ten can be seen, other card seen may also be a ten. His actual hole cards remain on the table.

Saw Molly's Game a week ago.

Serious trash IMO, don't waste your time.

No character development, poker content as already discussed lame, no story to tell, bs 'NYC lawyer' and 'Psych PhD' characters (happen to be intimately familiar with examples of both).

Trying to figure out what market segment the flick is aimed at ... my first guess was 13 yo girls, but the absolute lack of innuendos point more to 11 year-olds.

I'm not sure I understand your NYC lawyer and Psych PhD comment.

Nah, 11 yr old girls aren't into the Russian Mob, FBI raids, and lengthy voiceovers.

If they do a limited release in December it'll still qualify for award season. As someone else mentioned, sounds like it goes to a wider release next week.

It appears that she did and, as much as I pride myself on being able to keep my mouth shut, I wouldn't have.

While none of us know the real details, Molly Bloom is, IMHO, a fool.

All of the celebrities and billionaires dropped her like a hot potato when the games blew up...if any of them did support her, she has kept that secret.

It's one thing to keep your mouth shut when your friends/colleagues have your back...that's somewhat admirable.

But to protect a bunch of people who have abandoned you and won't give you the time of day?

It would be professional suicide to dish for the sake of dishing though. And, given the claims about the Russian mob links, it could have been literal suicide.

Some of those big names are no doubt sheep that just followed what others said, but aside from short-term monetary gain, she really would have gained nothing by the potentially ruinous comments she could have made. And, if she really does ultimately try to go into law (given that a felony does not automatically preclude admittance to the Bar), the documented ability to keep secrets is a plus...

I have always thought she was paid off under the table. If not, she is on the same level as Mother Teresa.

Movie did very well at box-office at weekend per theater. Something like $8,500 gross per theater. A good movie does about $5k per theater.

Watched the movie this weekend and thought it was alright. Poker is a constant in the background of the movie as probably ~50% of the scenes happen at her game, but I would't call it a "poker" movie per se. There are only 2 or 3 hands actually shown ("Player X" bluffing the guy with the nuts and the hand that puts Player X's horse on monkey tilt are the 2 that come to mind).

Went into the movie knowing about the big bluff hand so it didn't bug me that much. The scene is over pretty quickly so you'd likely gloss right over it in the context of the movie if you weren't looking for it (or didn't know what you were seeing). As a poker player, you know no one would ever fold the mathematical nuts. The scene serves to set up Player X as the alpha player in the game and how people would be in awe to play with Hollywood stars.

Surprising to see the opening #'s were as good as they are. There was only 1 other person in the theater aside from my girlfriend and me. Aside from the Sorkin-Chastain name pull, I can't see this movie appealing to someone who didn't play poker or have knowledge of the book. Takeaway from my non poker playing GF with no knowledge of the book/story was "So what exactly did she do wrong?"

good movies those days are all about the theme of ''cash grab'' and entrepreneuship.

social network
21
wolf of wall street
the big short
etc..

so i dont understand why some people say this movie cant be appealing to the general audience ?
