Yeah, almost positive you're right. It goes with the whole "a new man, won't be pushed around" line.
However, you could use KGB's tilt to explain the sizing on very last hand, in which Mike D check-called the nuts all the day down. KGB "bets it all" on the river, which is something like 2x pot. But "Big Daddy bet the pot" on the turn.
All this said, for all I know larger bet-sizing was more common back then. Seriously, go watch the first season or so of the WPT, or watch the WSOP ME coverage from the same era. Some of the play seems foreign to our 2017 sensibilities, and yet that was apparently standard play for its time. In short, it might not be a technical error from a film-making standpoint at all.
