The trailer looks awful, and it is one of the things that generally captures the essence of the movie correctly. Sad to say that it looks like they didn't do justice to the book, which had a solid base to be made into a very entertaining movie, with the right directing, etc.

The upside is that rounders remains the best poker movie of all time...

Wow, interesting. If the games are such that you don't take chips with you, then I guess it doesn't really matter.

Funny, I actually own a set of Bluff Canyon chips, and they're pretty nice for the price. I wanted a 1,000-piece set in case I had a larger game, and it was a fairly cost-effective solution. And at least those – or Monte Carlos or Nexgens – would have looked somewhat authentic on camera.

However, the chips shown in that trailer aren't even $200 sets. They are those injection-molded ABS "dice" chips that probably run for $40 for a 500-chip set. The comment above about Wal-Mart is exactly right.

How did the book have a solid base to be made into a movie? Tell me. What was the beginning, middle and end?

Regardless of whether one thinks it was a good book or not, it contained lots of actual celebrities, larger than life figures from Hollywood, world of finance and arts, with multi billion dollar fortunes, playing poker from back rooms of nightclubs to posh rooms at the Fiur Seasons, Hamptons, Beverly Hills mansions, Trump Tower and other places in NYC, with elements of Mafia, Russian mob mixed in, and the FBI, DOJ, ATF added to the mix. Lots of sex, drugs, relationships between players, dealers, massage therapists, hostesses, all add up to a good set of ingredients for a screenplay writer and a capable director to make an amazing movie. That's just my opinion. But as in times past, we've seen that most have a very difficult time making a great poker related movie.

Beginning was her brief backstory with skiing and all that as well as her first arriving in LA and struggling to get by. Middle is her being hired as a host and her rise to becoming the dominant host of the underground scene. End is her trial.

If you fail to see how that book has the potential to be made into a movie, you know very little about screenwriting.

Sounds extremely boring. But Sorkin will write great dialogue.

Yeah, the beginning and the end both sound pretty boring. Especially since my understanding of the trial is that the Feds accused her of being part of a complicated (and interesting) money-laundering scheme involving Russians, but she didn't actually know anything and just ran a poker game for famous jerks.

Bumping this.... Enjoyed the movie. Besides Michael Cera as Tobey Macguire do people know who the other real identities of the people involved are?

80% critics and 87% users on rotten tomatoes. Not to mention a couple Golden Globe nominations. Sounds pretty good to me.

Just saw it...entertaining, but way too long at 2:21...but then again I think most movies are too long these days.

Performances all good, though some weird scenes that aren't thought through...spoiler alert!

1. Molly describes vetting all the players thoroughly, yet allows Mob into game...poker attracts a lot of lowlifes...she should know that!

2. Poker hands are stupid. Aside from guy folding nuts, we have a guy folding a full house for another 50K in what is easily a 120K+ pot...people just don't fold strong hands that often, unless you are against an absolute rock. This guy was a commerce casino regular...no way he goes on tilt so easily. And the hand at the end with the russians (first one she rakes)...there are four players in the hand (maybe 5?) and 1.2 million in pot preflop. The flop bet is 300000, and the guy raises 200000? First off, got to raise at least 300K unless intial bet was 100K with a 200K raise? But who does that in a NL game into a 1.2 million pot?

Michael Cera is good...Toby does not come off well! Living in LA, with lots of friends in entertainment, I've never heard a good word about the guy (except his acting, which is quite good!).

Win oscars?...highly unlikely.

Nominations? Perhaps...Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba and Kevin Costner could all get noms, as well as Sorkin for screenplay. But Francis is winning for Billboards! And actors like Richard Jenkins (water) or Sam Rockwell have a better chance for supporting actor.

I could see a nomination for Chastain as she did a much better job than I was expecting. As far as a win, who knows. I have no idea how much bulls**t politics go into a win at these awards shows.

Overall I really enjoyed the movie. I was able to see it about a week ago during a private screening offered to a local poker group by the production company as a long as we chatted with them and gave feedback at the end.

If you go in expecting its going to be the best poker movie ever you are going to be let down but if you go into it knowing its about some hot chick who made a boat load of money hosting the highest stakes poker games to hollywoods elite and the stupidity that goes along with those type of people you will probably enjoy it.

As far as feedback to them after the movie.....why did they use ****ty chips!? Although they did address that in the movie once the game moved to NY but they still aren't the best (at least look wise).

The trailor was pretty good, didnt show too much poker related scenes so I wonder if that will reflect on the movie.

Michael Cera comes off as dorky Michael Cera in everything he does so I could do without him in this movie. Doesnt seem like his type of movie role but what do I know?

Chastain looked friggin great. I think this movie has potential.

Oof. See more movies. And no way, this movie can't hold Rounders' lunch money. The movie was somewhere between fine and good. It's sad/telling that we hold "not utterly cornholing the poker scenes" as the threshold for high cinematic achievement in a poker flick.

Here's what I wrote in a dif thread for anyone interested (no real spoilers below, but don't want to ruin it for anyone who wants to go in fresh):

Spoiler:
Quote:
The poker scenes are inoffensive for the most part with one glaring exception: one of the first scenes describes a high-stakes fish literally folding the nuts on the river in a 5-figure pot to a stone cold bluff from the Tobey character (played by Michael Cera who's as awkward as ever, but funny in what's a pretty minor role.) Molly's character is narrating the scene in a voice-over, and she first defines "the nuts" for the benefit of noob audience ('mathematically unbeatable hand'), and then she explains that the fish (whose cards aren't shown) was so intimidated by being in a big pot with a movie star that he folded the nuts on the river to a big bet. Utterly insane. (I mean, even if that's what happened IRL, the only purpose of the scene is setting up Cera as a shark; just have him bluff villain off a good non-nut hand FFS.) Of course in typical Hollywood fashion, the other players at the table go crazy when Cera turns over his bluff and no mention is made of the fish folding the MF'ing nuts on the river JFC, alright /end rant. That scene Fail, while bad, is pretty inconsequential to the movie and the other poker scenes are meh; there aren't that many of them tbh, and actual poker play is pretty much an afterthought to general themes of how she got started running the games, bad debts, mafia players in the game, plea deal considerations etc.

The ice-skating sequence...good God. There were audible groans in my theater. Just terrible from every angle. Felt like a tortured attempt to shoehorn in some kind of father-daughter resolution, wrapped around a corny AF skating metaphor. With someone who couldn't skate.
