This seems crazy to me that someone could lose 100 million in a 250k buyin game. It seems possible that she could be just trying to create hype for her movie and book. She said the guy lost and just came and paid the very next day. I guess he just stroked a 100 million dollar check, and then how would you handle disbursement of the money to the players? I imagine all these multimillion dollar checks changing hands would raise some serious red flags with banks and such.

Well I've read in a few articles that she told Ellen Degeneres in an interview that it was a 100 million loss

The numbers don't add up if you listen to or read everything she has said or written over the years, as well as the court cases and whatnot.

My guess is that she 'borrowed' the $100million from this connected story...

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...g-8940423.html

...but of course I could be very wrong. Wonder who would be able to lose $100million in one session? Andy Beal? Some unknown? The Hollywood guys don't have that kind of money, has to be one of the finance-type guys (Wall Street/hedge funds) I would have thought.

Yeah there's not many people that can actually lose that kind of money, And even in the book about Andy Beal it said he was pretty upset after losing that 16 million to the pros

Also, don't forget that someone has to win 20-30mm, at least, if someone drops 100mm.

I'm based that on my home game, and other games I've played in...if someone blows up, there is usually at least one HUGE winner.

And, if she's raking 5%, then that one night would probably mean at least 5mm in income, right? (Actually, at least double?) Or 10mm? And her biggest year is 4.7 mm in earnings?

The only thing is that you guys are probably not taken into account the loser of the $100mm may have been up $50mm so losing $100mm isn't losing $100mm.

At that level of loss, being stuck $100mm, I would think lots of guys would do a "leon tsoukernik" and "forget about the loss"

I agree... 100 million is an astronomically high number.

Not to ever quote The Sun newspaper as a credible source, but in their article she's quoted as saying:

“I saw someone lose $100million — not all on the poker table. I probably guaranteed $5million which was in the poker hand."

and

“But there were people playing backgammon, betting sports — it was mayhem. It was mind-blowing to me at first how much money was being bet but then I got desensitised to it."

Which in hindsight sounds a lot more believable.

Add prop bets and other various forms of degeneracy and the qualifier of "not all on the poker table" and this isn't even really a story. Maybe they had a huge position with this guy ↓

Well the card player article says that in an interview she told Ellen she saw someone lose a 100 million and he paid the next day, so that seems like it was all poker

A billionaire did lose 100 million in LA private games in a 12 month span not too long ago.

At the risk of oversimplifying things, 12 months is quite a bit longer than one night.

Duh, billionaires could never lose 100 million. That is absurd. No one could ever buy into a 250k min game for 10 million to cover their billion donkey friend who always buys in for 10 million. I mean it's not like a pro like D Neg would buy into high stakes poker for 1 mil (and in short order loose 500k) when most people start the game with 1-200k.

There is absolutely no such thing as monkey tilt. If you lose that 10m to your buddy there is no way you would buy back in for 20m. If you get it in with him with KK vs QQ and lose there is NO way you would buy back in for 40m. C'mon guys, no billionaire would ever do that. Not one of them, ever.

Does anyone not realize that someone in America loses their entire net worth every day in America playing cards? What is 100,000,000 to someone with 10,000,000,000?

There are only 2,000 billionaires right now, this story is impossible. Don't add any of the crypto-billionaires to that list, people that no one else even thinks are that rich. Some may or may not even like to play poker?

So let's just take a step back and realize that this guy, who may or may not have lost 100m in a poker game may only have 300m in the bank, he may not be a billionaire. It's gambling. People get coolered, cheated, drunk, tired, drugged and at the same time they are stupid, it happens everyday.

People used to ***** at Michael Jordan for having a gambling problem, not understanding that you just don't get a rush gambling without betting x% of your net wealth, he was so rich at that time that losing a few million wasn't a big deal to him, but everyone else freaked out on him. Look into John Daly and Charles Barkley while you are at it.

thread is lol

they didn't lose $100 mill just on poker. it was on prop betting and sports betting too.

don't know why critics are raving about this movie. it was very predictable and couldn't wait for it to finish. i'd rather read the book where she actually names names.

Just saw the movie. Excellent dialogue. Great pacing. Idris, Jessica, Kevin were all on point. While poker was more of a backdrop, it worked really well. Oscar nominations are deserving.

I couldn't get through the book the first time but will now go back and re-read the book just to see how closely the movie was inline with the book.
