Blocking the sites is trivial for an ISP to set up and could be done in hours. I know. That isn't the hard part.

The hard part is no one owns 100% of their network. There are various arrangements to lease wires and networks from each other to give national coverage etc. So every company actually providing connectivity and routing to the end user has to cooperate, and that means lots of entities other than the one that the user is paying their bill to. More often than not, your ISP authenticates you on the network but then does not handle any of your traffic once you are in. The exception is if your ISP is the local phone company or the local cable company, who own their own wires. They could probably block you on their own, but most other providers can't.

Re: Minnesota to Prohibit Access Between Residents and Gambling Sites.

The arguments about the Wire Act are well known. But I also can't find anything in MN law that makes online poker illegal:

http://www.gambling-law-us.com/State-Laws/Minnesota/

Is this 2002 statute current?

Citing online poker as to why your having trouble Canterbury/running aces is just stupid.

1. We are and have been in a severe econimic downturn, some saying a generational low in the market.

2. There are now two card rooms + all the casinos now offfer poker in minnesota so you have no more monopoly on this for live action. so one would assume your traffic is down.

3. The poker boom is over numbers are down everywhere so it would be inline that yours are down as well.

4. Online poker i believe has increased your business not hurt it. If not for online poker I know i would have never stepped in your card room and neither would have many of my friends. i would have never expirenced horse racing while i was there playing cards, thus would not head over there on a Saturday with friends now to bet the ponies.

If canterbury is behind this move it is extremly short sighted and poor business. online poker brings more people into your card rooms then any advertising or marketing you could ever dream of doing. IMHO

Re: Minnesota to Prohibit Access Between Residents and Gambling Sites.

This entire situation just seems incredibly wrong to me on multiple levels. The violation of my rights is one thing, but to me this just seems like a s****y Minnesota legislature that realizes they have dropped the ball on numerous occasions in the past 4-8 years, and so now they are going to come out of no where and drop this morality bomb and make a "political statement". I say stfu and figure out who our Senator is before you start worrying about an online game. Figure out our huge deficit before you start making progressive political "statements" imo.

Im game to do whatever it takes to join in the fight. PM me with updates if I happen to miss them on here. One of the first times in a while I've been truly depressed to live in Minnesota.

I called in the morning during the 9 oclock hour to talk to local radio host Chris Baker about the issue. I am like halfway through my name is Chris.

Re: Minnesota to Prohibit Access Between Residents and Gambling Sites.

As you've probably heard, online poker is under attack in Minnesota. Please help by contact the below state legislators today, and be sure to contact them EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A MN RESIDENT

John Willems, Director of AGED (651) 201-7529
AND
Governor Tim Pawlenty (651) 296-3391

Tell them:

* You are a poker player and you vote
* You strongly oppose their efforts to force ISPs to block your access to poker sites
* They do not have the right to dictate what you do in the privacy of your own home
* They do not have the right to withhold your money from you
* Poker is a game of skill and NOT ILLEGAL in the USA or Minnesota
* Please abandon this misguided effort to censor the Internet and nullify personal freedoms

thanks for the help!

Also, let me know how it goes, it will interesting to see if anyone actually gets through instead of just getting a voicemail

Another fear of mine is that the major sites decide to voluntarily suspend service to MN based on this.

How long until officials here in Minnesota realize that this is a totally unworkable and almost certainly not legal request/order?

Re: Minnesota to Prohibit Access Between Residents and Gambling Sites.

I just made my phone calls to Governor Pawlenty and John Willems from the ADEG and left them both messages stating basically an overview of the email that PPA had sent me, hopefuly it has some effect I encourage all from MN to do the same

I doubt the rooms will voluntarily give into this. That would open a huge can of worms. Also, it would set precedent if another state decided to follow MN in banning citizens from sites.

The only problem with this is that their morning guy Paul Allen calls the races at Canterbury Park. I am sure he is a company guy and would like to see the ban happen so as to help the company he works for. They offer company stock as part of their compensation package.

Now P. A. is loaded and is also a good guy. Not an attack on him.
