Multiple sites that dont serve the US too, PartyCasino blocked. How is that not just pure censorship if they dont offer games to the US?

Either there is some ulterior motive to blocking these sites at random that don't serve the U.S. and not some of the major U.S. serving sites, or John Willems and his organization seem completely incompetent for this and citing the wire act as reason for this enforcement.

Online poker can be very damaging to people's lives. Not everybody, and likely not the people in this thread, but the ones who are addicted, who lose more than they can afford every week, who lose touch with friends, family and reality, and who throw away their lives in a lonely and depressing way.

I'm speaking from my own experience, as well as others I know.

Poker is not free of problem gamblers, and I think that the government should be doing more to protect those people, so I support this move and hope that other states will soon follow suit.

Banning online poker will not save these compulsive gamblers...they will just lose their money elsewhere.

While I understand and sympathize with what you're saying, governing and legislating at the margins can be a very dangerous thing. Depriving a majority of something due to problem(s) of a minority will lead down a dangerous path. There will always be people with problems and self-destructive behaviors regardless of what things we attempt to ban.

if the government really hated gambling i would understand, but to ban some forms to allow state sponsered forms of gambling to flourish is so wrong and immoral

Online poker is particularly dangerous for at least three reasons:

1. The ease with which someone can convince themselves that they are a winning player (such a conviction is more difficult in other forms of gambling because it would be irrational, whereas in poker it is possible to have an edge)

2. Insant, 24/7 access (no need to drive to a casino)

3. Electronic money carries less impact than real cash or even chips. At least in other forms of gambling people will see the physical cash or chips being taken from them, while online it's just a number on the screen.

While it is true that some compulsive gamblers will find a way to lose their money no matter what, it is my view that without access to online poker many problem gamblers would have a greater chance of recovery, and fewer people would become problem gamblers in the first place.

Yeah as soon as a state accompanies an online poker ban with "you know what, we're getting rid of the lottery too, same idea" then I'll give this argument a modicum of credence. Or a state allowing gambling in casinos or on the lottery and actually putting in provisions to make sure people arent gambling more than they can afford. Casinos know a good chunk of their money is coming from compulsive gamblers, they dont give a **** and its not like they give the money back if they find out.

Until then, its just the rant of losing players and nanny state protectionists.

QFT- those people will find a way to waste their lives away any way they can. If the intention of this law is to protect problem gamblers, much more needs to be banned than simply online gambling.

Do you have any sources you can cite or are you just going to pull things out of your ass and post them?
Online gambling has grown tremendously and problem gambling hasn't grown at all.

At least individuals who worked to become winning players will get the money instead of the state lottery or Indian casinos with online poker.

That list is hilarious and upsetting. Its obvious that those making these decisions don't have a very good understanding of the issue, and that makes me wanna cry.

You think gambling is wrong and should be illegal? I disagree with you, but okay, you are entitled to your opinion.

You think some gambling is okay, but some is evil and should be illegal? The hypocrisy is ridiculous and I desperately hope you will listen to my side.

This though? It really seems like some quick-to-act idiot just got a bug up his ass that online gambling is bad after hearing a few horror stories and just said:

"We need to stop this! These people lost money. BLOCK these sites! Someone figure out which sites to block."

"This is the list?'

Yessir, but there could be...

"Bannnnnnnneeeeddd!" *gabble hits the table*

But sir...

"I HAVE SPOKEN!!!!"

"Now take off my powdered wig and draw me a bubble bath"

Yeah, that was a bunch of rambling that doesn't paint a very descriptive picture of whats in my head.
