I grew up watching WPT and i really regret not appreciating or even respecting Mike Sexton and all that he has done. I mostly play online but have done all the live stops for a while now.
I have been playing poker for around 10 years and met a lot of amazing people but also many awful ones. For some reasons I have always had lots of disrespect and hate towards all the older pros . A part of me thinks they're all scumbags because of the FTP scandal and all the stories we heard about many huge name pros.
Unfortunately that made it difficult for me to talk to any of these pros without bias on the tables. I am a very chatty player but i would always avoid talking to the big name pros.
Mike Sexton fell into that group even though he shouldn't have. My experiences with him have always been great but a part of me always disliked him for literally no reason. I am just a bitter idiot sometimes.
I feel sadness and regret right now because I actually played with him in late 2019 on multiple occasions ( Vegas Bahamas and Montreal). Even though we never really talked he remembered some plays I made and genuinely said nice/funny things. I didnt really expect that from him. He wasn't trying to get a read or anything, he just simply was a great wholesome person.
I think lifetime I probably played with him around 10 times in many different stages of a tournament and he was always the same likable person. It was not an act he put up just to maintain his job or whatever. He was really passionate about poker and treated everyone better than anyone else I've ever seen.
This is a huge huge huge loss for poker and I am making this post because I hope all the other online players like me realize how much this man meant to poker. We owe a lot to all that he has done.
In hindsight , I recall the last time i saw him that he was not looking very well. I think it was in Montreal for WPT 2019. It was late in the day 1 of the main and he seemed super tired. Knowing what we know now , he may have been sick already but he did not saying anything about it. He also did not show it at all , it's crazy. He was still the same amusing and fun player at the table.
Rest in peace Mike Sexton, you will not be forgotten
