Must have been correct about my assumption in order to get a response that fast.

MK: Still, a million dollars is a pretty good score.

MM: I needed to make one of the top three places [for it to matter]. Number nine doesn’t mean anything to me. It just enables me to pay off a few markers.

(...)

MK: I remember hearing that you had been having some serious swings just prior to the Series, that you had gotten ahead $750,000 online and lost back most of it.

MM: That’s true. One of the biggest mistakes I made was playing online during the World Series. Whenever I got knocked out of a Series event — which was every one I played in up till the championship — I would go home, go online, and play $50-$100 no-limit. It was a game in which you could lose $30,000 or $40,000 a day. My friends eventually came by and took away my keyboard and mouse. But I was f---ing jonesing. [Playing online poker’s] an addiction, man.

MK: Couldn’t you have just gone out and gotten a new keyboard and mouse?

MM: That would have shown me to be a real sicko. (Matusow hesitated for a beat, then came clean.) I played a little bit with a new keyboard and mouse — but I lost. I never won a hand of poker all month [during the weeks of the Series]. On one level, it was the worst World Series I ever had. But, when all was said and done, I walked away from the best World Series I ever had.

(...)

MK: And your online involvement goes beyond playing. You have a deal with FullTiltPoker.com. What is the nature of that arrangement?

MM: FullTilt takes care of me. But they don’t look at [my value to the business] the way I do, because of the fact that they’ve got Ivey and Ferguson and Howard Lederer. Let’s be honest, though. Those guys are all dry toast. They have no personalities.

MK: And you?

MM: When Mike Matusow is wearing a FullTilt jersey, everyone is interviewing Mike Matusow, everyone wants to talk to Mike Matusow. And that’s not my ego speaking. I don’t know why [the poker world finds me so interesting]. Maybe it’s because of my mouth. It’s probably because I tell it like it is and don’t ever hide anything. People like that.
This is from back in 2005. I accidentally stumbled into it. Makes you feel bad for the guy.

feel sorry for him because of what? that he chose to play in games where he was by far the worst player at the table and subsequently lost large amounts of money. money which he had gotten for doing nothing but wear a patch when playing in tournaments he didn't have to pay the entry fee for?

nah.

Interesting read, thanks for the post.

From the article

"MM: Online poker players are the worst poker players in the history of mankind. I play against really bad players who just give their money away. Guys put in $13,000, $14,000 when they can’t beat anything. Only online do you see that. That can never happen in a live game. I crush the no-limit online."

He was dead on, we really had it good back then. I wonder if he maintained this view throughout the years, and hence, busto?

A few years back I had a one nighter with a blonde MILF/cougar (first name began with A) who claimed to be still be kind of seeing him. Said he was as mad as a box of frogs and he stressed he out constantly. She was pretty wild and dont think he was in physical shape to keep up with her in the bedroom. Nice lady.

Knowing that someone you were about to sleep with was seeing MM would be pretty off putting Mike Matusow Containment ThreadMike Matusow Containment Thread

Only found out after the first round.

She was pretty hot and no one on 2p2 woulda thrown her outta bed tbf. Was happy with my nights work with a solid MILF.

Highly doubt he could pull that level of ass now. This was 2012 so just after the FTP money was drying up and when he freerolled into all the PAD/HSP etc.

Here's something I bet not a lot on here know, Matusow backed Scotty Nguyen in the 1998 main event. I'm not sure how much he put in or what the deal was but there was definitely some backing. You can actually see MM in the background cheering heavily near Scotty's first wife.

And this was well before Full Tilt. What I want to know is where the hell Matusow got money to back anyone? Also MM and Scotty must have had a falling out because I can't recall either of them speaking a word to one another in all the years of them being on tv.

Every time someone says MM is a degenerate gambler, a liar, and a bit of a ****ing moron, someone will come in to defend him by saying he is a nice guy with a big heart. No one is saying he kicks puppies or pushes grannies in front of buses. We all get it: superficially, he is sweet, nice, and (when he has any money) generous. These things are basically unrelated to whether or not he is a degenerate gambler (which he appears to be), a liar (which he definitely is), or the other thing.

MK: One undeniably good bet you made was when you backed Scotty Nguyen in the 1998 World Series championship.

MM: The weirdest thing happened that year. A guy by the name of Neil was backing Scotty [Neil also used to back Matusow]. Scotty had won $65,000 during the Series, but Neil didn’t want to put up $10,000 for Scotty in the last event. Then, I had a dream of Scotty winning the World Series. He was busted and I put him in four satellites [in reality, not in the dream]. Scotty lost them all and begged me to put him in one more event. I gave him $500 and he found two other guys to put up $250 apiece. He won the satellite, then he won the Series, and I got one-third of the money, $333,000. Neil was irate. I offered him $5,000, but he wanted $100,000.

Also, since 3 different people put up $1000 total for Scotty to play a satellite and win a seat and then play the main, I wonder how much Scotty got of himself. My guess is probably like 30%.

That would be my guess as well, given that MM got 33% for 50% of the initial buy-in. Assuming this is true, this just goes to show why never had any money. He basically put up $4,500 for 33% (minus taxes) of a $10,000 buy-in which may not even have been +EV in the first place. He's not exactly a financial/math wizzard. My guess is he shrugged off the initial financial losses which should have been a factor in determining Scotty's share just because he won the thing in the end lol. So yeah, this story kind of illustrates how he can be (kind of) a "good guy" which sents him broke which leads to a whole torrent of lies and shady stuff.

You have made this point really well. The whole 'but he's a nice guy most of the time' just can't be used to mitigate other terrible behaviour
