Looks like MGM had a cyberattack and the hotels and slot machines are all shutdown for now.

I was at the Bellagio today. Lots of computer systems weren't working, including the poker room's comp system.

The players got free pizza at around noon as compensation.

I’d be mad to be staying in the hotel and unable to access my room because of this. Free pizza wouldn’t be enough. Unless it was really good pizza.

No ATMs at my MGM either, got a food comp to cover my meal at least. Made for a quick session yesterday.

Hopefully you can keep updating how things look. Flying out on Friday, and staying at an MGM property, so very curious to how they are resolving things. Assume poker waitlists etc. works as normal, but that players might not get comps tracked?

It's interesting that all of the various systems went down, not just the reservation system, or not just the ATM system, not just the website --- these are systems that should be separated.

I'm not sure what regulations casinos are beholden to but many of them say that networks like this must be separated. If MGM has a cyber security insurance policy, it's possible they get audited and tested on all of these controls. I'm sure there's an explanation.

Arm chair QBs on Twitter are calling MGM's network design awful. Maybe, maybe not. We're all playing arm chair QB at this point.

The biggest cybersecurity conferences in the world were just in town a few weeks ago. Makes you wonder if that had anything to do with it?

What does that mean, 'this outage'? Since I'm reading that in most locations, slots etc are working again. Maybe they ment that some of the effects will last through the weekend?

(traveling to Vegas on the 20th so hopefully all is fine again by then...)

Comps have been down at MGM properties for years.... Sorry, couldn't resist the joke there.

So I work in the security industry and while I have no idea what's going on with MGM, what I can say is there's been a spike in discovered "0-days" across multiple vendors in the past few days. If you happen to see a notification about an update pending for Chrome, MacOS, IOS, Windows and Adobe Reader update immediately because your system is as risk.

I asked if it was just hospitality related and he said all computer systems were down. I don't go to the strip that much so I can't confirm.

Very plausible. In the same way some safecrackers go straight and become locksmiths, or advantage players jump over the security barrier to help casinos find cheaters, or Leo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can, many hackers who were black hat probably go white hat to work for cybersecurity. They would most likely still have connections to the black hat world even if they're supposedly straight now. It could even be an entire scam cybersecurity company that is poking holes into their systems in order to demonstrate that they need more / better security. Just glad they're doing it to casinos rather than hospitals. Take the big man for his money, not the healthcare system ffs.

I'm far from an expert on this sort of thing but pretty amazing comps room reservations atms etc are all on the same system.

I'm in the IT industry as well and we've received multiple similar warnings in recent days that there's a big sudden rise in cyber attacks.

If MGM management contacts the ransomware guys, the ransomware people should tell them that they need to see a supervisor who's going to issue them a voucher for the exact number of slot machines they want fixed.

There was a rumor that Ceasars got hit in recent weeks and paid the ransom. That appears to be true!

Dumb question, this affecting MGM nationwide, or just Vegas?

Wonder if ACR got a referral bonus with these hackers They've raised the stakes.

What I find interesting is these billionaire casino owners being forced into crypto exposure. I see good and bad.

Nationwide, although I have read that some properties outside of Vegas are functioning a little bit better.

Hacking is very often social engineering based. In other words, find some idiot in the company and exploit their stupidity to get inside the systems. Sounds like thats what happened here.

Same here, I'm arriving at Mandalay Bay on the 23rd, so fingers crossed. Staying at JW Marriott the two nights previous to that, so if **** stays bad I suppose I can always see if I can extend my stay there for two more nights, although availability would probably be an issue.
