How is he supposed to understand how bad that word is if he's never experienced what it stands for? I am pretty sure everyone knows it's a bad word that you shouldn't use, but it just isn't that big of a deal in other parts of the world, especially those that don't have a significant amount of black people living there.
I don't use that word, but I had no idea about its severity before living in the US. Until the 90s, a chocolate covered marshmallow was called 'Negerkuss' or 'Mohrenkopf' (Kuss = kiss, Mohr = old derogative term for people from Africa, Kopf = head) in Germany. When we played tag as kids, that game was called 'wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann' which translates to 'who's afraid of the black man'.
It's pretty ignorant to assume people from other parts of the world understand the outrage about the situation.
