Maurice saw and continues to see Mr. Garcia as a straight sucker. In reality the only thing someone like Maurice understands is a real threat of physical violence. If this guy he owes was in a motorcycle gang or in the mob or even some tough loan shark? Trust me that debt would have been paid back without anything being leaked to the poker community and media sites.
Unfortunately, Maurice Hawkins is another in a long line of pure scum in this community, who repeatedly gives the poker world a black eye with his angleshooting, his scamming and his bullying at the table. Add the fact that no venue has ever done anything about it allows Maurice to continue his scams and terrible behavior. He wins an event, oh golly let's take a nice picture of him smiling!! How lovely!!
On a quick side note, the guy who staked Hawkins should have done a lot more investigating and checking around before ever agreeing to any kind of deal with him. Maurice has had a terrible reputation for over a decade so it's not like he couldn't have done some digging and found out. Alas he didn't so now he's left with years of hell dealing with that scumbag because of that.

The quote from his backer sums the situation up pretty clearly,

If someone is such an elite player, they can put together their own $1500 buyin to a tournament. They can play 5/T and put together a buyin. If theyre a professional poker player and they can't do that on their own, thats probalby because their busto and they're busto because they're not as good as they make themselves out to be.
The markup that gets charged is absurd enough even if these dudes did actually pay up. But then you add in the counterparty risk of them not paying up...and just, why? Why do people buy action?

There's tons of reasons winning players might be busto, typically pit gambling problems / alcohol/drugs. Of course these reasons make them bad to back for counterparty risk. Clearly there's tons of busto dude who are winning in 1500 live timbeys
