Maybe good ole degenerate Maurice is part of the new normal. Bailouts and free money (if not any other forms of consequence like simply paying back the original entire debt with a proper vig aka interest rate) for all borrowers it seems. In fact, the world is inviting everyone to be not only a borrower but a degenerate one at that especially in the old world Europe, and Japan etc. You lend anyone over there money (at least thru their banking systems) and you gotta PAY THE BORROWER TO LEND TO THEM! Fact: Germany is charging around .4% to depositors when parking their money with their banks for instance. Japan is similar with negative rates and it goes on and on.

This is too bad. I always thought Maurice was a feel good story in poker about a mentally challenged player who is able to achieve mild success in tournaments because of passion and dedication to the game despite what many would assume are "natural" disadvantages. An ode to work ethic and love of the game.

But if these allegations are true, it appears he is no Cinderella story of success for a mentally disabled person, but rather quite the opposite as a conniving scam artist taking advantage of people wanting to help him

not sure if whosnext is your buddy or not, but I do agree with your sentiment. there are two somewhat related issues but are separate.

1) someone gets scammed, that's bad, I feel bad for the victim, wish it would not have happened to them. the scammer sucks.

2) someone does something pretty stupid (like loan money to a total stranger with an easy to find history of scamming people) That's not very smart and my only wish for this person is they get smarter and stop doing silly things with their money. fair game to call out their apparent "lack of smartness".


maurice is an enigma

on one hand, he has obviously not paid his debts over the years to many people, that is cardinal sin in poker, lowest of the low, and gets him the title of scammer.

on the other hand, dude has owned WSOPc events like no other

on the other other hand, his success at the table has been largely based on a willingness and unmatched ability to put people on absolute monkey tilt with mostly abusive behavior (sometimes humor and wit) in blatant effort to get them to spew their chips to him. Is this unethical strategy/behavior at the table (thus should be consistently penalized by TD's ) or fair game and just advanced form of "speech play" ?

Generally I follow the same rule. However, I have loaned out money twice. Both times were to well known businessmen who were there every week. Both times I got paid back right away, and it was actually them who tried to pay me back ASAP.

I don't believe in lending money out to somebody who's super iffy for the sake of "keeping the game going", but I think it can absolutely be applied in rare circumstances where the person is clearly wealthy enough and trustworthy, but simply doesn't bring a large budget to the casino.

Maurice Hawkins seems like one of the most sketchy individuals on Earth though. If a guy seems ridiculously sketchy, don't lend him money or stake him. That said, he doesn't really compare to Jamie Gold, however.

Why not sell the action? When you lend money to a gambler in a shiiite time to be a poker player, you do so knowing your risk. I think poker is his life and if not, he will make good on it cause that's how he rolls.
