You can certainly talk to a law firm about seizing his assets and other things if the loan or stake is documented. I mean, $13k, for legal bills that will cost you, probably sunk.

Best just to embarrass him on 2 + 2 and other forums to prevent other people from staking him until he reimburses you.

State your case and make it so no one else loans this guy again!

But, to attach assets and go full legal on him? I think legal fees would be punitive.

If it was me, I would do everything possible to publicly embarrass him and do my best that the poker community would freeze him out of future loans and stakes until I was paid back.

I don't know Vegas Lawyers, but very few Philly lawyers will take $13k on contingency (if they are any good). Looking at $400-$500 an hour for them to pursue. Thinking 3-4 hours for them to just evaluate your case. So, your 13K is down to 11k. Then whatever it takes to attach assets that you may or may not get. Probably requires a half day in court. Looking at another $2,500 probably. So, your 13 is down to 8.5, and you are out that money. So, good money after bad.

Look, there may be a Vegas attorney that specializes in that. If there is, you should look them up. If it is East Coast money, 13K is in that sweet spot where it hurts really bad, but just costs you more to get it back.

Look, you have to pay the money to win a judgement, which he may or not fight.

Then you need the ability to collect it.

That costs more money.

You could win and he just refuses to fork it over. Now, you take him to court again, and more money. Then you win, and win legal bills.

Then he hides assets. It gets tough.

From what you describe, I think you have a solid case, and will might win legal fees back in a fight (which in US Law, not sure about Nevada specifics, is brutally hard to win legal bills), I think you are better off pressuing him in other manners.

If it was $60,000-$75,000, be better to go after assets. I think it costs you 7-10 to win, with no real way to get paid, even if you win and he refuses to pay.

However, I am not attorney. I would certainly suggest you consult with a Nevada attorney when you return from Macau.

I have no idea how someone who has been here for 12 years and has a couple dozen threads in the Marketplace wouldn't know this, but I guess that's a good thing because it means you probably haven't been scammed before.

haha ya i have done a good job of avoiding being scammed for the majority of my career but they suddenly started getting the best of me and out of nowhere i got 3 or 4 people trying to screw me over.

Ah, that makes sense. The thread was intended primarily for the Marketplace, but we encourage 2+2ers to use it for any issues with people that other 2+2ers might transact with, so yours fits right in. Or feel free to start a thread in that forum if you think it's suitable. Seems to me like it could warrant one if you wanted to.

Loaning money has risk. Risk means the debt may not be paid off. Welcome to reality.
