Love the PokerStars streams where they show the chop discussions.
yeah it looked like it on yesterdays FT too. i guess PG dont want the viewers to know they chopped for 20K each. Keep the glamour alive for TV.

I wonder what U.S. Pros who play all these high rollers profit a year? 30K, less, or are they ending up in debt every year?

Quite lame they dont show chop discussions.

either don't allow it (like WSOP) or allow it and show it (like PokerStars)

to allow it and then go off camera is just cheezy.

I want $5 of my $10 back

I agree, but if hes got to be there, please more Ivey stories. Even if he has to make it about himself in the end.

I agree, this is very frustrating.

Hopefully there will be some banter between Doug and Brandon Adams. Also is that the Zach Clark or some businessman?

Mr. Newey (or anyone who may know ), is there some sort of special trade agreement or tax treaty or something like between the US and Germany - they don't have to pay taxes on winnings like everybody else who visits the US?

They're renegotiating the trade agreement between Canada and the US right now - wonder if there's any chance winnings might be part of the discussion ...

There is a tax treaty between the US and Germany but that point is kinda moot for all the German players in this tournament series since none of them has his residence in Germany anyway to avoid the taxman (yes, people in Germany pay taxes, too)

But if you are a recreational player with a residence in Germany, you don't pay taxes on your winnings if you luckbox a $1k WSOP event.

There must be less of a tax penalty for the German players, what with so many participating.

I still say Uncle Sam is grabbing a piece of their winnings.

I believe non citizens have to file paperwork to get the taxed portion back, and it's more complicated than that.

Just a hunch.

Did you even read my post?

I'll try again, it's fairly straightforward:
a) German citizens who pay taxes on their worldwide income in Germany don't pay taxes on gambling winnings in the US. Not a single cent. And it's not complicated at all. Hand paperwork to casino, don't have any winnings withheld.
b) (almost?) all German citizens in this tournament series have their permanent residence in a country other than Germany. The US taxes its citizens, almost every other country in the world taxes its permanent residents but not citizens who live somewhere else.

You contradict yourself, badly

You say they don't live in Germany for tax reasons.

Therefore, part a) does not apply.

So whatever tax treaty you talk about does not apply.

You clearly are in over your head.

You are either a troll or can't read, but I will try a last time. In my initial post I said that there's a tax treaty between the US and Germany (fact, I've used that one to not pay taxes on gambling winnings in the US when I had my permanent residence in Germany) but that this point is moot anyway, since (almost) none of them lives in Germany (but in countries that have similar tax treaties with the US and don't tax gambling winnings)

Now you can check a list of European countries that have a tax treaty with the US and don't tax gambling winnings. Then you can take a look where those German players have their permanent residence. You might be in for a treat.

Pretty much whole EU has a Tax Treaty with US, so we don't pay a single cent to IRS. Lots of Germans have UK as their tax residency, so they aren't taxed by UK either.

Because they are not 'competing'

As a pro - UK resedents will make more money than USA based players - when the 'win the same amount'

But that doesn't change how a US pro wins or loses, as they aren't in competition in that way - and it doesn't change their EV long term or short term - it just is, what it is - for where you live

It's not about who gets to keep the most money - people are just playing for a living [if they are] and to make as much as they can

It's not 'keeping up with the schmits' here

Thanks so much everybody for the help with the tax stuff - didn't expect it to open such a can of worms, but guess tax may tend to do that sometimes ...

Was just looking at the prize payout thingie again for the Poker Masters - with +25 players, will the jacket go to whoever wins tomorrow ... maybe only the winners of the preliminary tournaments may still have a chance even if thye don't come in first tomorrow, if they cash high enough?

Guess that's kind of nice that everybody who plays tomorrow still has a chance at the jacket - although maybe it might have been nice if it had turned out that peoples' cashes from the preliminary rounds had given them a little bit of an extra chance, maybe?

Is it based on cashes or ROI?
I thought is was ROI....
