Hi,

I was hacked on Wednesday November 15, 2017 by a group playing out of Russia (although Stars says the hack occurred out of Brazil - the IP address and location in the email I received stated Location: RU VOR).

I had logged out less than two hours prior to the hack occurring from my home base. Stars sent a generic email letting me know my account was logged in from a different device. Instead of questioning the log in half a world away (or the fact the hackers changed the language to Russian in my account), they allowed the hacker to drain my account within 13 hands on 3/6 and 5/10 limit tables. The accounts bet each hand to the max and then my account would fold at the very end.

So instead of taking any responsibility for allowing these logins to occur automatically (even though they knew something was up by virtue of the generic warning email sent when my account was logged in) they continue to point to 10.2 and 10.3 of their terms and conditions - essentially my responsibility to keep my password secure. The crack security team then proceeded to lock my account after the hackers were able to drain my bank roll.

Something is obviously wrong with their security to allow someone to either a) steal my password or B) allow someone to log into under a different IP and different device half a world away without any challenge.

I am beyond frustrated and would suggest to anyone that you money is not safe in Pokerstars - they are obviously in the midst of their system being compromised but are trying to deflect this issue for obvious reasons. How can anyone ever trust having any money in their account if you have zero insurance or balance protection in the event your account is compromised.

I would be interested to see how many other has recently had a similar experience as I have contacted the Globe and Mail in Canada to see if they are interested in investigation TSGI.

Thanks,

So it's been almost 3 years now since we first reported on these hacks and unfortunately it seems like nothing has changed.

Whats even more worrying is that when you consider only a very small fraction of PS players post on here, the total number of accts hacked in a very similar manner must be in the thousands.

Obviously at this point it's crazy to expect Stars to take any steps to so anyone who reads this that doesnt have the PIN setup I'd strongly advise you do this now.

There is a recent thread in Internet Poker of someone that had their account hacked with a PIN set up.

While I'm sure there must be more than those who post in this thread, I wouldn't assume the number is going to be huge - people are much more likely to post on forums when something like this has happened, as is demonstrated by the number of low count/brand new posters in this thread.

I'd agree on setting up a PIN, for sure.

Actually, never mind PINs, how about this:

Instead, sending a code via text messaging to a player's mobile phone is likely to be much harder for a hacker to access.

I'd say that if the number to which this happens doesn't start growing as well, it could well be something on the poster's end. Still concerning, obviously.

It should be noted that he didn't lose any money. Not sure if that's indicative of Stars changing anything to catch people doing this, or just a fluke.

PIN+SMS validation is almost unhackable. If attackers somehow steal your password they will need PIN. If they still somehow steal your PIN they will need SMS code on top of that when they login from different computer than you normally use. Both are free.

In this day and age, people travel. What would be the counter-solution to this; insta-freezing any account that is not logging in from it's home country?

While it could have prevented some hacks for sure, it would have more likely lead to a ton of pissed off customers who couldn't play while on vacation etc.

The vast majority of logins will be from people at home - people travelling will be a tiny fraction of logins. It's not unreasonable to expect someone logging in from a different country to pass an extra security check (you could let Stars know in advance to avoid this).

Accounts should definitely be insta-froze when someone logs off then logs on an hour later from Russia.

-Except for mobile devices, the technology to geo-locate what countries people are logging in from has a big false positive rate. In the case of PokerStars, if they have 2million users a quarter, you're talking about locking up the accounts of thousands of players incorrectly every few weeks.

-Having a one-size fits all set of rules on the basis of countries makes no sense, because there are very big countries and very small countries with different levels of international travel and so on.

-A far better system is to make such account security enhancements personalised, which PokerStars did with both the two-factor authentication stuff almost ten years ago, and the "SMS Validation" system four or five years ago. Clearly, players such as you, BigWhale, or the other recent victims, don't know much about that system, so that highlights an obvious opportunity for improvement.

I previously posted in this thread under the "PS Michael J" account, but no longer work there. I am not sharing any special inside information from my time at PokerStars here, but rather, just sharing some pretty widely-recognised and public info

I travel a lot and I like to play on Stars from my laptop wherever I go. Some places I go I have no phone contact but I have satellite internet connection. It would make my life a living hell if PokerStars automatically froze my account every time I logged in from a foreign IP. If they forced me to use SMS this would be a big problem because I am sometimes in very remote areas with no cell phone access and only satellite internet available.

Please don't ruin it for the rest of us if you can't keep your account secure! It's up to you to enable 2 factor/PIN/SMS etc. if you want to. If you don't want to enable 2 factor then you must realize that your account can be compromised and it is UP TO YOU to make it more secure.

Perhaps Stars can put a popup in the cashier informing people that it is their responsibility to make their account more secure or not to and that Stars is not responsible if you decide not to...then you must click OK to continue before you can deposit.

Also, there is a good reason why they won't reimburse you if someone from Russia logs in and dumps your entire bankroll. Think like a criminal for a minute:

I have 10K in my Stars account but I am short on cash and I am travelling in Somewhereistan. I meet a local guy with a Stars account and we devise a clever plan. I will give him 10% for his trouble if he lets me dump 10K to him and then cashes it out. So we do. I now have 9K, hookers and blow, and I'm happy except my roll on Stars is zero. So I email Stars and inform them that some ******* in Somewhereistan has hacked my account and all my money is gone. I cry and wail and tell them that I never gave anyone my password and that it must be Stars fault. So Stars reimburses me the 10K. So now I have hookers and blow and a 10K bankroll on Stars.

It would be ridiculously ******ed for Stars to reimburse people who get hacked like this because they may have actually done it themselves. Extra security is up to me, not them. They have made it available which is enough.

I just don't understand why they locked the account only after it was drained and then asked me to send a picture of me an my driver's license to have it unlocked again.

Why not lock the account immediately after I was logged in from Russia a mere two hours from when I played at my home base (they were able to send my a generic email as soon as it happened). They changed the language to Russian as well - shouldn't that raise a flag? I guess I fail to understand why they took the step to lock my account later on that day.

Just seems really stupid considering these scenarios seem to happen regularly - protect the players not continue to allow the hackers to take advantage of this system.

Just an awful company to deal with too - been a player off an on for over 12 years. Donks like me are essential for this site - guys who casually play and fill the site with money for the better players to win.

Every single hearing on internet gaming in the US includes the discussion of how well geo location works. This is kinda a big deal for legislators. So either the entire industry is lieing through their teeth or somebody in this thread just might be wrong.

Interesting. I just typed "Where am I right now?" into google and it said I was in some kid's basement outside Moscow.

Spoiler:
Not.

None of the spam about pokerstars optional security measures is relevant as this has happened to dormant accounts too

The root of the problem though is that Pokerstars is serving a country (Russia) where it doesn't have a licence and from which the EU/UK don't have the ability to extradite people.

Anyone who has lost money should make a report to the UKGC and make clear that you see the problem as PS grey market policy.

No, you've misunderstood what they're saying. In those hearings on internet gaming in the US, they're talking about using various mobile services using mobile phones to geolocate. This is because the technology that is used in the USA - using mobile devices - is good enough for that purpose.

That technology uses some combination of onboard sensors (basically, the same stuff you use when you try to find a location on Google Maps on your phone - nearby wifi networks, nearby cellular networks, GPS, and GLONASS, and some even beginning to use BeiDou). In the case of desktop/laptop devices, most of that information does not even exist.

Geo-location info on desktop/laptop devices, using only IP address, simply isn't good, because there's no "official" listing of where an IP address is. This is because IP addresses aren't assigned to locations, they can be traded, and the use of VPNs etc., can easily circumvent this anyway.

If you required hackers to pretend to be from the same country using their IP address, hackers would simply pay £2 a month (or whatever) and do it. Thus, restricting IPs to the same country might well make you feel better, but it wouldn't solve the underlying problem.

The way to solve the underlying problem is to identify individual devices. I logged into PokerStars from a "new" (reinstalled) device yesterday, and got a prompt for a SMS before I could access my account. That is a secure system, because it would actually stop a hacker.

Restricting to some amorphous and false concept of "foreign IPs" won't secure your account. It will have an excessively high proportion of false negatives (hackers getting in) and an excessively high proportion of false positives (legit people being locked out). That makes for a bad security system.

No, the exact opposite. The technology using mobile devices is probably good enough to determine a location for this purpose. However, the technology for desktop and laptop devices is not.

On Dec.26/17 my Pokerstars account was hacked and the entire balance, roughly $677, was chip dumped (lost intentionally) to one other player named 'DZZZ555' in 22 minutes. I haven't logged into my Pokerstars account for months. The hacker DZZZ555, logged into my account half way around the world. I knew someone logged into my account because Pokerstars sent me an email notifing me someone logged in from a new device and location where they logged in from. I logged into my Pokerstars account to see all money gone and I sent Pokerstars security an email 36 minutes after the hacker logged into my account. 1hour and 16minutes after I emailed Pokerstars, Pokerstars replied "bankroll in your account...is still being investigated". 10hours 40 minutes after the hacker logged into my account Pokerstars gave me an update "Despite our efforts and quick actions we were not able to recover any of the funds". That's worrisome to me because my account was drained at 07:47am, i logged into my Pokerstars account at 7:53 AM and I emailed Pokerstars security at 8:01 AM so not fast actions at all by Pokerstars and Pokerstars allowed an instant cashout. Pokerstars also notified me they have no documentation about the person who cashed out. Pokerstars also won't tell me which withdrawal method was used.

I have over 10 accounts with money on it in my computer and only my Pokerstars account was hacked. I've been playing at Pokerstars for 14 years, $677 is not that much but I feel I don't want to play on Pokerstars anymore. As I search google I see hundreds of accounts on Pokerstars that got hacked the same way I was with the same generic copy/paste email. Even Daniel Negreanu’s PokerStars account was hacked and $46,000 was lost at the tables. Rumor has it PokerStars gave the money back to Negreanu because he is sponsored by Pokerstars.

Bottom line, Pokerstars should make it mandortory for security features to prevent this from happening again.

Here are the emails between Pokerstars and I:

This is when the hacker logged into my account:

Hello David,

Thank you for contacting us.
We have conducted a full investigation into your account and we believe that your Stars password may have been compromised.

Our facts to support this are as follows:

The logins to your account show no failed attempts; whoever accessed your account knew your password perfectly.

Computer finger printing technology is utilized by our Security Team in order to determine which computer/device your account was accessed from. In this case, our investigation concludes that your account was accessed from a foreign computer/device where no logins were previously detected from. It is therefore possible that your login credentials have been compromised.

With regards to the bankroll in your account, unfortunately, the balance in your account was affected in this case. This is still being investigated.

To conclude this matter, we would like to advise you that we will not be liable for funds lost on your Stars Account. We will not be held liable for any losses as a result of insufficient security measures to ensure that your personal details remain secured. This is in accordance with the sections of our Terms of Service which state your responsibilities as an account owner.

We highly recommend for you to take necessary action in protecting your computer, email and Stars Account along with personal data stored in your computer. This includes, but not limited to; scanning your computer to ensure no harmful software are installed and changing the password in your registered email account and Stars Account as a precautionary measure.

In order to reinstate your account with a new password and Stars PIN, we would like to ask you that you please provide us with:

- Confirmation of your computer/device and email safety.
- A clear digital photo of you holding your ID document. Please make sure that your full name, date of birth and the expiry date of the document are clearly readable.
Finally, you may wish to visit the 'Help & Support' which offers suggestions on keeping your password secure and details about additional security features.

Your cooperation is appreciated.

Hello ,

Thank you for your email.

Regarding your case, as soon as you reported the unauthorized access of your account we started an investigation of the activity. Your account was frozen and the funds were traced. Unfortunately by the time we completed our investigation the funds had been intentionally lost to account 'DZZZ555',which had withdrawn the funds.

Your account was accessed from this new location on 12/26/2017 7:25:53 AM. The person who accessed your account used your email address and correct password to log in. They immediately started playing cash games until the balance had been lost by 2017-12-26 07:47:34. By 2017-12-26 07:51:41 the account that received the funds had already cashed out the funds. Despite our efforts and quick actions we were not able to recover any of the funds.

Please understand that in these cases we cannot refund money when the money is no longer in our possession, when it has left the site.

We rely on the UserID and Password combination to grant access to Stars Accounts trusting that these details will be strong enough and will be kept safe by the account owners. We are logistically unable to prevent every login from a different location until we get confirmation from account owners due to the large number of accounts that have legitimate logins from new locations and the time it would take to complete this confirmation. It is up to each account owner to ensure the security and strength of their login details.

We understand this is not the outcome you were expecting. We can assure you that we took immediate actions to trace and recover any funds available, but unfortunately this was not possible.

We strongly recommend that you file a police report of this incident as someone got access to your PokerStars credentials and personal information. We will cooperate with the authorities if they contact us to assist in their investigation.

Chris

Hello,

So, in less than 22 minutes, my account was logged into from an IP half way across the world and all money was chip dumped, around $677, to account 'DZZZ555' and the money was withdrawn from DZZZ555's account right after. I emailed Pokerstars 36 minutes after I got unknown device email.

Is there no way to recover the stolen funds DZZZ555 withdrew? What method did he/she withdraw to? Do you not have all his/her personal information and don't you require photo ID to withdraw? Has DZZZ555 account been frozen?

I feel I did nothing wrong and this should never happen. I feel it is not my fault and I should be reimbursed.

I have attached photo of me holding my ID to reinstate my account as requested by Jennifer, Stars Security. But I will probably never play on Pokerstars again

Hello,

I'm a little upset with the generic copy/paste response and not answering any of my questions. I've been a long time player on Pokerstars, around 14 years. I thought my money was safe in there. I've checked all my other accounts, e-wallets and only my Pokerstars account is missing money. I do no share the same password as my email and other accounts, I have anti virus and windows is up to date. I've checked my email login history and no one logged in there except me.

I'm also upset my account was drained so fast and Pokerstars allowed the other user to instantly cashout even with my 36 minute quick response. It also seems Pokerstars did not contact the cashout processor and try to get the withdrawal reversed. Pokerstars does have Photo ID of person who withdrew the money, correct?

Can I also request the hand histories?

It would be good if the PS client had an option to automatically block access if they detect you are logging in from a new device or location. I understand detection with regards to location isn't perfect but if they're sending an email they clearly know something isn't right. I'd be happy to put up with any occasional inconveniences this may cause if it meant an extra level of security.

ouch @davidbergeron. that's a chunk.

Someone hacked my account too, and chip dumped well.. my micro roll. but still.

it was someone in Quebec, and the stars reps name was pierre. COINCIDENCE!?

obviously they let me know someone suspicious logged into my account after they left it dry and empty, and then said they will not be held liable. Is stars that dirty that employees are now colluding with friends to steal funds from players? I'm just being paranoid but honestly I wouldn't put it past those greedy ____ 's)

then they froze my account and said I need to provide ID to unlock it and I really don't wanna be uploading driving license, photo ID's online.

For 2 week a rusian guy tried to find my password everyday and they were nothing amaya could do ...

And a little question from a noob in security matter: Why don't we get a username to connect to our account different from our screen name?
