This guy is my pick for most unknown winner:

Dude, thats Bill Smith. After he beat T.J. Cloutier in the "85" main event he came in like 5th in the Main event in "86". He was a good guy who liked to drink his budwiesers beer while playing. I know because (he was my friend) and I came in 2nd to Berry Johnston that year (86) in the main event. Bill got unlucky to come in 5th when he had AK against A8 (all in) and Roger Moore (hall of fame inductee) hit the 8 on the turn. Bill Smith died too early. He was a well know player from what was then the breeding ground of the greatest NLHE at that time, Dallas,Texas. Most of the top NL players came from Texas during that era. They brought the game (NL) to Vegas, and it was called Texas NLHE.

There was'nt anywhere as much dead money in the ME in "91" as there is nowadays. Still its harder to win it now with the massive field.

Sad, I know Brad. He must be hurting at this point to sell it. This isn't for charity. He played in a smaller field but think about how many people covet winning the Main Event.
It's like when Superbowl players have sell their World Championship ring.

Has claimed that he has switched focus towards online tournaments in more recent times, his ability subjected to mixed reviews.
wonder if anyone knows his s/n

I have been asked many times. How did you ever get into poker?

I have always said that many things have happened that influenced me into taking the direction that I did. As a kid I remember running around the kitchen table looking at my family’s hands while they were playing pitch. It was a social thing that all of my family liked to do when they got together. They were usually joking and laughing while they were playing. As a youngster I always wanted to play but they made me wait until I got in my teens before I got to play regularly. It was always a lot of fun but especially when I was able to make a high bid with a bad hand.

My first memory in poker was in the fall of 1968 riding a train from Payette Idaho to Kansas City Mo and back. My two teammates was Jim Miller and Jerry Nicholson, we were representing the State of Idaho at the Future Farmers of America National Dairy judging contest which is held every year in Kansas City Missouri. We had a great time on the trip coming in 5th in the judging. The part of the trip that stands out the most on the trip besides the Juicy fillet mignon we had there, was playing penny ante poker on the train ride each way. I don’t think we even slept on that trip. I guess quitting a big winner with 35 cents extra in my pocket made me feel like a great poker player. Boy do I have a lot to learn.

So your Mike Harthcock?

You're posts are really interesting. I knew that the pic was of Bill Smith, I was trying to point out that he's is definitely one of the least well known Main Event Champs - only you could actually name him from his picture. Which champion do you think is least well known amongst today's players?

Yeah, I knew Bill pretty well and actually flew from my home base of Florida to play in some good NLHE games in Dallas, Tex, and Bill played in the games too. He was a solid player and a pretty cool guy. Its sad he died from complications from alcohol, to the best of my knowledge, at too early an age.
Bro, I was born Michael Ivan Hart, thru divorce and adoption, my adopted name became Mike Harthcock. I moved down to Florida in 1970 where I was around all my blood relatives and my biological dad Edward J. Hart. My father was one of the best poker players down in Winter Haven, Florida ( This was also 3X WSOP champ and 2 time ME runner up Dewey Tomko's residence and also 3x WSOP champ Hilbert Shirey's home town). I picked up the game myself from family games, and played in the game Tomko ran for over 15 years. When my biological dad died in 1985 of a massive heart attack, and my son Ryan was born in 1987, I wanted my son and daugther Courtney to have their real blood name, so I legally changed my name back to Hart. Your right tho amigo, when I came in 2nd, my last name was Harthcock. Thanks for the compliment about my posts, I try. I would say Hal Fowler is the least know ME winner, because he disapeared and never returned to Vegas, and was never heard from again. Doyle Brunson did some detective work, and found out Fowler got sick and was hospitalized for a long time, and he (Fowler) instructed everyone not to tell where he was, then he passed away. He gutted a straight against Bobby "The Wizard" Hoff who held AA to win the championship, not positive what year it was. I think it was around 80 or 81. CYA later and GL amigo. Its tough for the young players to know the past champs, coz they've all gone down for the dirt nap.

This is the WSOP world Championship braclet won by brad in 1991. Only one such braclet each year is awarded in NLH and is considred by all poker players as the ultimate, or holy grail of poker.
TJ's was not for the main event. This prized braclet in poker is akin to the Hart Trophy's won by Rocket Richard in 1947 or Gordy Howe in 1951. Imagine what they would be worth to collectors? Brads braclet, for those not aware, is the old, initial, type. Heavier and , to me much more valuable. doc earle

The bidding for the 1991 World Series of Poker main event bracelet of Brad Daugherty ended this past Sunday on the auction site eBay. The closing bid was $30,100, however the undisclosed reserved price was not met, and the item was not sold.
Who the **** is willing to pay $30k for this guy's ME bracelet? I mean what do you do with it? Put it in a display so when people come to your place you can tell them this is Brad whatever's 1991 WSOP ME bracelet only to be asked every single time "Who?"

Good read, you should post more often to educate the younger players on the history of Texas Holdem. We need more insight on the past before we forget
